Remember the stupid decision to roll out the higher rate tax bands to pre 2006 cars last budget ?

remember how stupid we all thought it was, because it doesnt change peoples buying habits to buy greener cars, it just robs the money out of the back pockets of existing owners ?

well it seems we're not the only ones to think its stupid. And with the vultures circling over gordon brown with all time lull in popularity. It looks as though there will be a rebeillion.

So the bottom line is, nobody was happy with the new budget.

This is good news, stupid movement by the government considering the already drastic changes in running costs to vehicles. I am voting for another party just because of this stupid tax, I am sure that I am not the only one!
 
I don't understand some of the "Green Agenda" - People won't be able to afford to chop in their cars for newer, more environmentally friendly ones because their cars will drop significantly in value after falling into the higher tax band.

Also, where does all the revenue raised from "Green" taxes go? I'd say more likely towards Houses of Parliament drinks subsidy than planting trees :rolleyes:
 
It's about time people started standing up to this government, it's just a shame it's taken 11 years for people to realise that Labour is always disasterous for the country in the long term...

Rock and a hard place, to be honest. If they U-turn, they're going to have to justify where else the money is going to come from because no doubt they've already spent the profits of their thievery. If they don't, then the image of them being determined to steal everyone's money at the time when they can least afford to change anything is going to be bad.

I'm happy either way, People are finally starting to see Labour for what they have always been, a bunch of authoritarian, tax and spend, state dependency creating socialists...

I sincerely hope so. I disagree with the whole green agenda thing, but it may well be all the doubters are prooved wrong. Unlikely but possible

One thing will not be prooved though, is that taxing people more for there existing cars will any way help this. They will produce far more pollution by changing cars and buying a new one to avoid tax, than they ever would driving their 2.0 automatic mondeos.

And what's worse is that the government is fully aware of this. They commissioned a piece of research that showed the road tax changes would provide no benefit whatsoever, but carried on and introduced it anyway, hiding the research away until it was finally revealed under the freedom of information act.

Nope. they had to borrow 2.7 billion for that u-turn. I doubt they will risk doing it again. There really is no more money.

Hatton has just rabbiting on about our low carbon economy. Great timing considering considering the protests today. I sometimes wonder if they time these speeches to totally wind the public up.

Agreed, it's fantastic that people have finally seen the light, especially evident in the MAy 1st elections and the bi-election. But as you say they will try and steal our money some other way.

I think that I am going to try to get away from here before I hit 30 to Dubai. Stay there for a number of years tax free and working, and if over 5 year (I think) no more student loan. Then I can come back and get my skyline which will be classified as a gas guzzler, as I'm sure the hippies will have become bored of 4x4s and oved onto performace cars, so anything other than the G-giz and Prius.
 
As I have mentioned before, the public have not been fully aware of how this new VED banding will affect them, but they seem to be getting the idea now that there is more focus on the subject.

TBH, although the 10p tax debacle was bad for Labour, I think that this along with fuel prices / duty will be the major factor in them getting the boot at the next election.

They cannot really do a u-turn on this as well, one of the reasons has already been mentioned above

the other is that if they back down on this then they will lose whatever respect their loyal supporters have for them, plus they will look like a party with no stomach for a fight.
 
Do you think if they reverse the decision on pre 2006 cars etc that there value will go back up from what they have already lost?

I already know the answer of course but i'm hoping of course i'm wrong and my car is worth more than a packet of walkers finest in 1 yrs time when i swap to a lovely 530i of E60 goodness.

Hell yes, it's my dream car, and by then I should be able to afford one :D

Or just waste my money on an R32 (and servicing) for a few years and live in it, or just settle for something like a DC2 and a mortgage. This paragraph will probably happen in the next 3-4 years as Dubai and working on their metro is nothing but a dream.

GTS fail in my eyes and GTR win ;)

Well at 23 it should nearly be eligible for classic car insurance. But I won't be waiting that long before scraping the monies together to afford one. In 5years I'l be chartered which should easily allow me to afford the car I want. Only the government will stand in my way then :)
 
If this gets overturned it will be excellent news.

Seeing as this is an environmental thing it makes no sense to try and tax people for their 'highly polluting' car and almost forcing them to buy a new car because it's more economical/efficient, forgetting that keeping an older car will be far more beneficial to the environment.

Far more importantly than that I can then spend the saving on penny chews
