I recently decided on upgrading my system and bought:
  • E8400
  • Abit P35 Pro XE
  • 4GB PC6400 C4 ram
  • Lian Li PC-P60 case
  • PNY 8800 GT

I actually bought the 8800GT BEFORE everything else in hopes it would fit my current system, but I'm a noob and it didnt ;$

Now I'm wondering, is this card good enough for the new system I ordered?
My concern is that I use a OcUK 24" panel at 1920 x 1200 res via DVI.. and hope to play games like COD4 comfortably at max res..

Would it be worth selling it for another better card? If so, which one?
I would also like after-market cooler, but which one?

In COD4 i had to turn off AA and Smoke Edge Smoothing to run at 1920x1200, otherwise certain levels where foliage/grass was common caused bad screen jitter. With them off it runs at a rock solid 60 FPS though and the difference is minimal, so its up to you really :).

Another concern is future games for atleast another year or two would be much more demanding, so wouldn't it be worth stepping up while I can still get decent dosh for my 8800gt?

Sell the GT now

Then get a GT200 in a few weeks...

8800GTX haven't been selling in MM for 130,

So when GT200 hits 8800GT will be sub 70

How much will the GT200 be? I can't really wait it to come out though, as I have all of the other parts ready to be set up..

My budget would be about £150+vat I guess.

Wonder if your CPU is holding you back there... on my E6600 (3.6gig) with 8800GT (740 core) at 1920x1200 4x FSAA 16x AF with everything maxed out it runs smoooth as smooth 80-120fps most of the time - just drops to low 40s when your looking over a lot of stuff like at the start of the map city/tv station map when your looking over the city with lots of choppers in the air and my brother with a Q6600 gets even better performance than I do without OCing on his 8800GT.

Decent power hungry must play games are miles off this is the problem at the moment.

I would get the 8800 gts or 8800 gtx second hand though If I were buying now.

I've picked up a 3850 for £62 new to tied me over until a more substantial upgrade over the summer. Seems pointless getting an 8800GT new at the moment, as soon as the new ranges come out there'll be loads of bargains in the MM.

So considering I run my 24" monitor at 1920 x 1200 - my 8800 GT will be okay for COD4?

I would say OK but not 100% ideal... depends what your requirements are... if you want 60+ fps constantly then the 8800GT isn't going to get you there with max settings at 1920x1200 but if your happy with 80-120 most of the time with drops to 40-50fps when things get really rough then it will be OK.

Thats is true.

I mean who deosn't want a 8800GTX for 130?

Can't believe no one snapped it up...

surely a GTX is better for that resolution?

although id wait for the new cards... you will regret it if you dont;)

single player yes

multiplayer no

multiplayer side just helping my mate yesterday with same size screen and a bfg 8800gt and after messing with configs and max settings he was playing at 12x10 everything on full and getting 125fps all time.people will say i play at 1600x10 or whatever .yes and the fps drops to like 30 or lower at that res which is too low for decent online gaming experience.

I'm running COD4, and it's never gone below 40fps, usually around 70-100fps and smooth as silk, hasn't slowed down once from what I've seen and running at 1920x1200 as well... so to people saying ti won't run... WTF? 40fps minimum with average being 60fps+ The only thing I've not got on is AA and AF, have to admit, but I can't believe how smooth it is, keep the 8800GT for now and see how prices in the summer come down for G200...

Cheers
