I need a graphics card for a new rig.

I will use the pc for :

  • Photoshop
  • Illustrator
  • Age Of Empires 3
  • Commandoes 3
  • Films.
  • Possible video editing, however that would be minimal.

But I also want it to be future proof for games such as the new Age Of Empires.

The 8800gt has been recommended to me , but reading reviews it seems its quite loud?

And I also know the new cards are coming out very soon, but i think they will be to expensive to buy, but should bring the price down for others.?

the 8800gt has an excellent price for performance, I think the price will probably stay around the £100 mark at most stores. The price probably won't drop that much.

If you want better cooling solution look at the gainward 8800gt models because their cooling is dual slot and quieter/better controlled.

Should I wait for the new ones to come , hoping they will drop in price? Or do you think the drops will not be that drastic

not sure how it all works but from what im guessing is that the new cards should be a lot more powerful and a lot more expensive so i adoubt it'll effect the prices of the 8800GT/9600GT

both the cards are a amazing bang for buck so you wont be losing out at all

If I was in the position of buying a new card now I'd wait until the new cards came out to see what prices/models are on offer, if it's an oem edition then you can save compared to a retail bundle from companies like xfx etc.

So maybe you and others might want to put up with their current card for now and save a bit more £££ to put towards one of the new cards depending on how they do in reviews compared to the 8800gt for example, then a better decision can be made.

You can pick up an ATI 3850 for £60 ish with a silent cooler, would be perfect for you!

I'm inclined to agree...

The games / applications you tend to play are really easy games to run on any relatively modern gfx card.

8800GT's are fantastic but it might be totally overkill.
