For the last 10 years we have always bought BBQs that use lava rocks and gas to cook the food. Last year I went over to a mates and he has a BBQ that uses a plate to cook the munch, I wasn't very impressed with it. That smokey BBQ flavour just wasn't there and tasted more like the food had been grilled.

Today mum and dad have bought a plate type BBQ, we haven't got it out the box yet as i'm not sure we should keep it.

Whats your views on these plate BBQs?

I'm rather a culinary expert, if I don't say so myself. My dad and grandfather, who both live with me, are both chefs. Although I don't normally dabble in "BBQ"s, I would say that you should go for that classic smokey BBQ flavour.

Indeed charcoal cannot be beaten, but charcoal is hassle for the times you wanna do a quick speedy couple of burgers on BBQ without waiting for the right temp

You just need some napalm (petrol + polystyrene) then a blowtorch to light it will get the charcoal to the right temp in a jiffy :p

I always thought that gas bbq's used the gas to get the charcoal lit, then you turn the gas off and use the charcoal to cook with??

Carcoal for me, however it seems a bit hit and miss in my garden, it funnels the wind and no matter where I put the BBQ it gets effected by it. Sometimes it helps it burn really well and other times it seems to take forever :/

Once had chicken cooked over a magma crater in Lanzarote, mmmmm lovely!!

Gas and lava rocks are a good compromise imo, you get some of the barbecue flavour and cooking style without the smoke and hassle of charcoal, and it's infinitely better than gas and a plate.

I have the type that just has gas, no rocks, and a normal grill on it, not a plate.

Having just gas is definately the best way to control the cooking speed and how evenly its cooking.

All you need is a carcoal BBQ with a height adjustable grill, I always slow cook my burgers etc on my BBQ, don't like them too black and they are absolutely lovely!

I thought you were asking OUR opinion, you should have thought this through BEFORE posting the thread!

Yeah I am asking for opinions on gas plate BBQs. All I said was charcoal is great, but some kind of gas BBQ is what i'm after. When/If your unbanned read the thread subject before spouting off.

Cheers for that, that is what i'm thinking aswell. We have opened the box and it seems that the BBQ is split in two halfs. On one half is a cooking plate and on the other half are open grills that expose the burners directly to the food.

Looks like we are gonna take it back, shame as its built so well, stainless steal with three burners for only 80quid.

The hunt goes on for the perfect BBQ ;)

There is no alternative to charcoal cooking if you want a barbecue. If you want to do some outside cooking then I guess the lava rock version of the gas cooker would be better.

And while your waiting for yours to get to the right temp i've already eaten mine and i'm onto CAKE :D BIG CAKE

pfft noob you eat the burgers off the gas one while the charcoal heats up then eat the steaks/sausages from that, then move on to cake :p
