Quite specific ideas:

Up to 2.5 Litre Turbo Charged/Super charged engine
30+ combined mpg (preferably around 35)
Comfortable on motorway
Sporty looking
Nice enough interior
£10-13k from a main dealer
No older than 3 years old
Preferably doesn't look like too much of an old man's car

So far:
Focus ST (bit thirsty, but I like the looks)
Audi A3/A4 2.0 T S-line (prefer looks of A3)

Suggest away

Edit: buying within a Monthish (maybe end of june)

If you want a car with serious performance but is understated at the same time, then how about the Mazda 6 MPS? 149mph and 0-60 in 6.6s.

A used one can be had with the money you mention.

Nice thinking outside the box, had a look and ticks a lot of boxes but the only issue seems to be the engine efficiency.

27 combined mpg, and a bit of a co2 pumper. Shame because its looks alright from the outside.

What an odd set of requirements....

You won't get 30mpg combined, let alone 35mpg, from an ST. Try 24/25mpg combined.

I'd recommend a 330d Coupe.

Meets all your requirements (except the arbitary requirement as to engine displacement).

He'll get that from a Leon Cupra R, but they might be getting a bit too old for him now, newest will be on a 55 plate IIRC.

Well, you also benefit from Mazda reliability, which is very good, and I think the interiors on these cars are also very pleasant. If I was looking for a performance car I'd give it serious consideration - I like the fact that it is a wolf in sheep's clothing ...
