Right, first of all, i'm not racist. At all. One of my good friends is Polish, another black - they're both great.

But for some reason, it really narks me off when people from other countries come to the UK to work/live etc, then never bother to learn the language.

Today, at work, I had to actually speak another language to a customer because they couldn't speak English. Now, whenever I go to a foreign country, I at least make an effort to speak the language, so why the hell can't people do that over here?

/rant over.

Why will they put effort in if you are forced to learn and speak their language? People are lazy. :o

People should not be allowed to live in the country if they cannot speak the language.
Perfect example is my brother left primary school last year, but he had a kid there that was from portugal, spoke minimal english. What's the point on him even being there?
EDIT: Not because I'm racist or anything like that, but how hard must it be for that person if they can't communicate with anyone at all?

I agree, annoys me when people speak a different language in front of your face, offends me, who knows what there saying.

Not racist at all.

plain and simple, i dont like it.

No problem with foreigners moving over here to start a new life ect, but have the courtesy to speak our language.

You want to come live and work in this Country, then the least you can do is have the basic decency to learn the bloody language! After all, it's not as if English is some obscure dialect that hardly anybody speaks is it?

Yeah! I mean, all the ex-pats living in Spain speak Spanish! ;)

Seriously, I'm sure the Spanish hate it as much as we hate people not talking our language :p

How do you know that person was living here and not just on a temporary visa?

Alright Hitler, calm down ;)

Only jk - i agree. People should be able to speak English to an acceptable level, even if it isn't fluent as hell, you should still be able to converse with them.

I still find it a little depressing that on my average trip to my local shops I pass a whole bunch of people, but can't understand what any of them are talking about (mostly eastern European and west asian).

Nothing against these people, but it just feels odd living in an area where everyone seems to come from somewhere else, leaving me feeling a bit like the odd one out.

I was actually very suprised, this particular bloke just came wandering up to the bar and spoke in German to me. Didn't even attempt to string a sentence together in English  I enjoy speaking/understanding other languages, but I'd like to visit other countries to do that :o

Oh let me tell you something about foreigners:

Right now my flat has been invaded by Chinese Mainranders. These people who I've seen in Spain doing language courses are quite probably the most odious people I've ever encountered.
I would rather a group of chavs or whatever in this flat. Ligers even.
They are rude, inconsiderate, impolite, dirty, AND GUESS WHAT they cant speak a ******* word of Spanish. For example one who I've had the displeasure of knowing and even living with learned for 6 weeks and failed the 'hello my name is' dumb donkey exam. She's still here btw.
The Chinese community (haha) are my least favourite of all here in Spain. I feel so helpless as they shout and jibber away.
I've no one else to share this with so thought I'd vent a little here.

Really unhappy atm as new ones moved in in the last few days. It was so nice here for about 6 weeks when none of them lived here. Now they all congregate here. Not just the ones in my flat but the others who go to the same language school and who live in the building. I actually find it quite upsetting really as there is NOTHING worse than being in your own home not knowing who the f is really living here who is hanging out here all the time. My mobile phone got stolen the last time I had (6 weeks ago or more) similar problems. I feel insecure in my own home right now.

I'm Latvian and moved here 10 years ago, and i can quiet comfortably say that I'm better at English then most of my mates. All my family speak very good English because we wanted to fit in and it makes life so much easier for everyone.

Simple answer is that most of the people that come over to work in low paying jobs do not care enough. They come over and work to earn their money, then go back. And if they can get by without the native language what insentive do they have for learning it.
