I've got about £100 in theory to spend on a new graphics card (goes in a system with 22" belinea monitor, E6300, 4gb ram, currently with a 7950GT in it) I can stretch that budget a bit though if it makes sense. The 8800GT was the card to get last time I looked, any advance on that?

Are there any in particular that are better for cooling/noise levels? I'd sooner pay more for a quiet card than get the cheapest one and end up spending more on aftermarket coolers, I like quiet.

Cheers!

yes the 8800GT is currently the best bang for buck.
I wouldn't buy now though, wait until the new cards are out an dsee what prices are doing, and what the new cards are like.

Ach, it was like that when I got my Voodoo :D The best time to buy is always next month.

As far as cooling, I gather the standard fan is noisy... Gainward ones seem to come with a bigger cooler, and the Gigabyte one looks distinctly zalman-esque... Worth the extra money?

Just to say thanks folks, one OCUK 8800GT ordered :) Course, I got carried away and bought a new mouse and CPU fan as well, so any cunning savings have just been squandered :D

Lol northwind the new cards were out 16th and 18th of june was not a long time to wait to maybe get a lot faster card for your money but 8800gt is a very nice card for the price anyhow.

Tried SLi myself - basically not impressed as , in general, although I got large increases in frame rates for games that already ran fast enough ; in games for which I needed an increase (Crysis - what else) it was slower , never mind faster, than a single card.:(

May well be a driver issue more than anything BUT am not impressed with nvidia's track record in this area and in partic. actual driver support for sli has, imo, been rubbish.( may be the recent driver update cured some of the problems but by that time I'd sold on one card , given the other to my son, and upgraded (cough) to a 9800GTX.)

Clinching factor for me was that no matter what increase in performance you got you always had the increased noise, heat and power consumption.:(

May be a bit biased but having wasted my money twice (tried with 7900GT's a few years ago) will not be rushing to try gain. Am def. of view that your better served with a 'better' single card

Turned up yesterday, nice upgrade this... Obviously it's instantly out of date but still, if I get the £40 I expect for the old card it's a good value for money upgrade. But god DAMN this is a noisy card. Surprised that doesn't get more mentions, I was playing Stalker last night on the exact same settings as I did with the 7950, the old card was near silent and the new one whiiiiiines. So one cooler required. But still, very pleased. So thanks for the help folks.
