Note: old spec. new spec further down...

Hi guys I got a few questions.

Before I start, the computer is going to be used for;

  • Auto Cad
  • Photoshop
  • Downloading (movies & music)
  • Playing media (downloaded: HD Movies, Movies, TV shows & Music)
  • Internet surfing
  • Multi-tasking most of the time

Not sure on the mobo, just chose a random one, but would like to stick to gigabyte as in the other thread people prefer it over Asus.

Also not sure on the Energy Efficient CPU?

Hows the PSU? 520W Ok?

Im trying to build a fairly quiet setup. I want to get it as quiet as possible really. I know the raptor is quiet loud, but its fast so I'll let that one slide. xD

Monitor
, I will most likely be going for the HAZRO 24" for main screen, after the Vista issues have been sorted out by HAZRO.
And use my Samsung 23" HDTV as second screen (dual screen)

I'm looking to start this build in june/july

Cheers Guys!

If you're looking to start building in June/July I suggest you wait as the new generation of graphics cards is coming out.

Oh right, but would I need the latest spec graphics card though? plus they will cost a lot more than the one I have spec'd, right?

I haven't really been following the developments but from what I understand the ATI range will be targeted at a more general type of a gamer rather than high end so prices won't be ridiculous.

As for the PSU the Corsair should be enough (HX are manufactured by Seasonic I believe). Only thing I would change in that build is ditch the raptor and possibly invest in a different mobo.

Well most of the P35 mobos are capable when it comes to overclocking but obviously some are more capable than others :p

There are a lot of good motherboards and a lot of the time it really comes down to personal preference. Just have a look at the mobos that you like and ask yourself what you're looking for. Some of the more popular high end ones are the likes of Abit IP35 Pro, Asus P5K Premium/WiFi-AP and MSI P35 Neo2-FR is a good budget overclocker but lacks features. Like I said have a look at what they offer and see what you will need from it in terms of features (firewire, improved sound, etc) and then go read up some reviews about them.

EDIT: Oh yeah just noticed you might want to invest a few more quid into a retail Q6600 as that has 3 years warranty instead of 1.

Well. I have a Panasonic 5.1 cinema system already...
What sound card would you recommend, as I was thinking of using the standard onboard sound....

X-FIs are bugged with Vista apparently so the likes of Asus Xonar DX and Auzentech are recommended if you can stretch to that. If you're not really fussed about sound though you can stick with onboard sound as some mobos are very good in that area.

Raptor compared to current crop of HDs is not that fast & its noisy. I'd go for 2 of those F1's :)

Get the 8800GTX since its still good until next gen cards come out ;)

With the price of that raptor you might as well grab two drives with 320GB platters and raid 0 them.

Also wait before splashing out on a graphics card until the middle of next month... new toys f.t.w!

(Probably already been mentioned above, but it's too early for me to read that many posts. :p)

don't buy now.
there is the P45 chipset coming out to replace the P35 soon
there are new graphics cards coming out in the midrange from ati, and at the very top end from nvidia (which will effect prices) 16th and 18th next month.
raptors, as said, are pretty pants, they're noisy, and not that much faster than other drives. you'd be far better off with two samsung spinpoint 500gb in RAID0. also the "velociraptor" 300gb drive is out some time not that far away (its available on pre-order now I think)

basically, wait until the end of next month before you make such a big investment.

Cheers for that excellent info guys. much appreciated.

Ok so I will bin the Raptor. Get only the new Samsung F1's
wait for the P45 chipset board
wait for new gfx cards to come out and see prices

I would buy an Evga 8800 GT and use there 90 Day Step-up/upgrade programme when next gen cards come out next month

Do they let you step-up to a different brand, if he chooses to get a new ati card (new nvidia cards are going to cost the earth)

Also, another bonus of new cards coming out is that prices of current cards may drop, so he may be losing out there if he decides to stay with an 8800GT.

Not really sure how it works never used it. I guess if he want to stick with ATI then the EVGA step up programe wont be an option he will just have to wait. He can use the onboard gfx for a month :D
