Can anyone recommend a webhost that WONT turn out to be a complete pile of rubbish?

My web host appeared to be a fairly large professional company and everything was running ok-ish (occasional downtime, but only for an hour or so at a time), however on Saturday morning my web server has gone down completely, and my hosting company won't answer their phone, they won't respond to any of my online support tickets, and the server is STILL down without showing any signs of being brought back up. Current status: down for 6 days and counting!

My father's business is hosted with them and this is becoming an absolute disaster! Mostly because many emails sent from customers have not reached us and by now have probably timed out and bounced back. This is severely affecting the business and also emails bouncing back doesn't exactly reflect well on the business' image.

The host was pretty cheap ($85/year) for unlimited everything on CPanel apart from 7GB of space and 100GB monthly bandwidth limit, plus a free dedicated IP.

I'm looking for a similarly good package (i.e. no silly restrictions like only 3 subdomains/parked/addon allowed etc) but also the hosting company needs to be UK-based, the servers they use need to be UK-based, the servers must be fast, awesomely reliable, and their tech support must be always reachable and not be composed of complete and utter morons.

Can anyone recommend me a host with the above spec for around the £50-£60/year mark?

Also I don't want to see any recommendations unless you have had first hand experience for a very long time and you know for a FACT that the provided service is extremely reliable. Also I don't want any half-arsed guesses in how reliable your host has been, i.e. you should do some kind of monitoring so you know exactly when your website has and hasn't been available to the web.

tsohost.co.uk, have used these for what must be 4 years, no real problems, only a couple of outages which haven't lasted for more than a couple of mins :)

I don't want to rain on your bonfire, but those "silly restrictions" are what enable a company to provide a decent, fast, reliable service for a fair price.

I used to like SpoonoHost before they decided not to bother any more.. I think they may have even sold up, i'm not sure.

I jumped ship to a 'major webhost' in the form of HostGator and have not had any trouble since.

I recommend eoshosting.com as always. Not had any problems since I bought my hosting from them just over a year ago. I cannot really comment on the support because I've not had to make a ticket for anything major. Minor things like php.ini alterations and the likes usually get a response between 15 mins to an hour.

Rackspace are fantastic. Most of the time they alert us to problems before we know they're there. They are commercial-grade though and I'm not sure if they do smaller stuff, but check them out.

I have been with ukwebsolutionsdirect.co.uk for a year and have never had any major outages. Support is also fantastic, and I usually have a reply within 15 minutes.

vidahost.com

found them via these very forums, awesome for all my reseller needs

best support from any hosts I have ever used :)

TSOhost, cheap but you get a very good service it beats all those american hosts hands down. The support is also second to none, when ever I have had a question its been answered with in 10 minutes.

I've been with EUK Host for 2 years now.

http://www.eukhost.com/

Aside from a few isolated problems with emails getting to a particular clients domain quickly ( although that appeared to be a Yahoo server problem and nothing to do with EUK ) I've been 150% happy with their service.

Their customer service is in my opinion, second to none. They have guys on "Livechat" who actually know what they are talking about, if you submit a support ticket it gets answered almost immediately and as well as that, the EUK staff offer support on their forums and monitor them closely for posts asking for help.

I'm sticking with them for the next year as I can't envisage me getting a better service elsewhere.

A second for Eukhost from me :)

I bought their cheapest .NET hosting package for a work project and as has been said, I used their live chat facility and the customer service guys know their stuff and were friendly and efficient.

either Vidahost or JustHost.com are excellent in my experience but, like robmiller implied, you get what you pay for
