Why are so people concerned with 100% and 1000/1000 constantly?

I see time and time again people are looking for the last 1% of a game (GTA = pigeons or billboards in Burnout, for example) and I just cannot understand why? I'm all for completing the storyline and enjoying the game but why do people look at squeezing every ounce out of it to the point of it becoming an obsession?

Surely this has a negative effect and it actually starts to be a chore rather than an enjoyment like it should be?

I can see what you mean about it becoming a chore but personally its the feeling of getting an achievement thats taken ages to complete and actually completing it.

Just think completing the mile high achievement on call of duty 4, its so dam hard and surely it must make you feel good knowing others have found it hard so you must be decent at the game.

Just for thrills really. I enjoyed getting 100% in GTA this time (first ever time i've done it in a GTA game) because there was a competiton in place that anyone that got 100% before 19.5.08 won a unique key from R*. I would have done it in a longer space of time for the achievement though if the key wasnt on offer.

I like to feel ive got the most out of the game and hunting the pigeons isnt all that bad in GTA, plus you get ingame benefits, like a spawning police helicopter with machine guns.

Achievements are there to make a game more enjoyable, and most of the time give the game replay value.
I'd be willing to bet that the 360 owners (who are interested in achievements) have a different playing experience of GTAIV compared to PS3 owners - I wonder how many PS3 owners bother with getting 100%?

To me its a sense of acheivement. For example I played Mass Effect like 6-7 times, however I enjoyed the game hugely. Imo its the best 360 title for me.

I hate the collect xxxx achievements though. I'm not a gamerscore addict, but I am an achievement one and I feel I'm getting more out of a game by doing them.

I've always 100%'d GTA games cos I just love playing them, and usualy everything to do in them is fairly fun.

However, I never, ever, go searching for hidden packages/pidgeons/etc by myself. Just don't see it as enjoyable. I use a guide for them. Meticulously scanning every inch of a game world I'd rather just be blasting round having fun in doesn't do it for me.

The satisfaction of getting the achievements.

Some games I don't even bother with them, but when there's some good ones that you feel like you've earned it's well worth going for.

I hate the inconsistency of achievements. If a games got well thought out achievements then I think it adds to the experience, but when achievements are chucked in at the last minute or unimaginative, it just feels a bit naff.

i love the sense of accomplishment when getting this sort of thing. It's the same as the crackdown orb's that i keep going back to and try to find the last 3!

I have started on the pigeons on GTA and hoping to get them all done if not just to a sense of revenge on the ones who keep crapping on my car :D

Why not? You pay £30-40 quid for a game why not play it to its full potential?
I don't deliberately go out to get gamerpoints but most of the time they add extra life/replayability to the game. If I'd kept GTA for the PS3 I'd probably never bother finding every stunt jump etc, but I found it worthwhile on the 360 and glad that I did as most of them were good fun! Same for all the pigeons, it made me notice areas/details of the city that I may have otherwise never paid any attention to.

because some people like the collection aspect of games (and life).

Thats why some people have all the pokemon and some have a few. Its also more of a challenge and more to the game.

So for the people who are interested there is more to do after you complete the main part of the game.

If people weren't able to cheat getting achievements, they would have a little more meaning than they currently do.

Something to do for me.

i absolutely hate it when developers put in anything to do with "find xx amount of things" especially when it runs into ridiculous numbers. i mean who actually does this? and who can actually do this without a guide anyway?

its fair enough if its a handful and you see some sort of secret or easter egg but come on! Im all for extending the game beyond completing the main story but they are better ways than to find stuff. Its all about the challenges, scores and stuff like that for me :D
