Ok got about £500 to spend on a camera DSLR and don't mind buying second hand so I'm thinking I should get a half decent one for that. So far looked at

Nikon D60
Nikon D80

Cannon 400D
Cannon 30D

is the 40D worth the extra money

At the moment I want a all rounder lens so my budget needs to reflect this. So any other ideas would be great.

Are you completely new to the DSLR world? Any kit e.t.c?

If not, you must bare in mind you'll need CF cards, bag, cleaning kit and specific lens for your needs on top of the Camera Body (with or without kit lens)

Shop around and you might find a bargain. Apparently the Sony A200 is a great bargain now at New, or you can look for second hands. I personally found myself a Canon 20D body second hand + 50mm lens, bag, tripod and CF card for just under £300inc.

As far as my research into DSLR world got me, lens are damn expensive!

No kit but I know it will be a case of building it up over time so I want something I can add lens to as I go.

Also now saw a D50 with lens for £220, dam my head hurts from looking at all the camera's

If you can I think the XXD series is worth the extra over the XXXD series. I've been playing with my partners fathers 40D recently and it's just so well built and miles better than my 350D for example. I haven't played with the 450D though, so mine has aged a little in comparison. The 40D is definitely on my wishlist over Summer, that or a 30D and another decent L lens.

Whatever you do, don't buy the D60, search for D40 threads to see why.

After trying Canons and Nikons you'll probably want to buy a Nikon. If so go for a new D80 (but watch out for the imminent D90) or a used D200.

Alternatively buy a used D50 and some decent lenses.

The 40D is a better camera than the D80 and available for about the same amount after cashback... had he been thinking about a 5D or D300 I would have said go Nikon.

True the 40D>D80, but Canons aren't as good to use in my experience. I'd still pay more for a Nikon with less spec.

My Nikon bias is based on using several of each brand in both recreational and professional applications.

If I go for the D50 where do I stand with lenses, will they fit a D200/D300 or other Nixons if i decide to upgrade in the future.

The D50 is compatible with all the modern DX lenses and some of the older lenses that don't have the AF motor in the lens itself. If I'm correct, the D60 and D40 don't have the body motor drive screw for these lenses.

So to answer your question, yes. Except if you upgrade to a D3 which us a full frame body.

So what's is the difference between the D60 & D50. Also sent you a mail about your D50 ;), if you didn't get it try emailing me.

Yea, good idea there. Lenses? None. Money left? None... ;)

I'd say 350D/400D + 18-55 IS or Tammy 17-50 2.8 and then a Sigma 70-300 APO... :)

oops my bad, didnt notice the bit about also needing a lens :p

i would still go over budget and get the 40d though but thats me always spending more than i have :D

after having a 350d and then going for a d80 theres a massive difference in build quility, the canons just feel like kiddie toys to me now, i had a feel and try of the 450d and i was just not impressed with it at all

i have just upgraded to a 40D from a 350D

have to say i have never use Nikon before but the difference in build quality of the 40D from my previous 350 is fantastic.

If your going to go Canon id get the 40D!
