Alright guys,

I wonder if any of you talented motors lot could offer me some sound advice. It's Summer and I have a job lined up for the next 4  months I have off and will require a car. My old man spotted a '94 MR2 going for £1250 somewhere in the vicinity and thought, maybe.

However, can I get anything newer / more reliable for the money? Not particularly fussed. Don't need 5 doors or anything 'useful'. Not much town driving but I may keep it for after Summer and take it back to uni.

Not fussed about diesel / petrol etc. either is fine by me.

Any questions to help narrow it down would be good, I just don't know where to start!:)

£1.5k will get you a VERY nice V or W reg Mk2 Mondeo, Ghia or Ghia X easy. It might just get you a semi decent old Mk3 too...

And tbh, in this price band, I dont think you will get many other recomendations.

Insurance shouldnt be too bad either.

W140 S-class, not newer than that MR2 but a hell of a lot more comfy.

Hey, its what i'd buy for this money :D

They dont break, and if for some reason they do GSF stock parts for next to nothing and they are easy to work on.

A guy i know has a small fleet of old Mercedes' of this era, and they are absolutely sensational when it comes to reliability.

It was a tongue in cheek suggestion obviously, but its not actually that bad an idea :p

You do speaketh thr truth. If you go to the channel islands they all run ancient Mercs as Taxis. When we went my dad commented that 600,000km seemed a bit low for the age of the car and the fact its a taxi (my dad has done almost 300k miles in 5 years) the driver told us it had already been round the clock twice. Thats 2,600,000 KM! Mental!

Any other suggestions boys? :)

What Merc was that?

How reliable are they? Ideally I'm looking for something that won't be too costly for the 3/4 months I'll be driving it.

The Primera GT's are well renowned for being very reliable. People don't even batter an eyelid when their primera's are on 150,000.

No cambelt either to worry about. The only thing you should have to worry about in that 3-4 months is petrol. Driving sensibly on the motorway i get about 38-39mpg, driving in town i get about 25-26mpg

you can have my mondeo for £1500, ghia x with all the toys, plenty of mods done for you already and lots of broken parts already replaced...SHOULD be reliable? :p

Won't get a better handling quicker car for the money that isn't jap turbo nutter or really old tbh

EDIT:

W reg ghia x, 115k as of yesterday, 17" st200 alloys, koni adjustable suspension (5k miles old) st220 brakes with mintex xtreme pads and black diamond combi disks (About 500 miles old), k&n 57i, goodridge braided hoses, SVT inlet manifolds (upper and lower) powerflow decat twin exit system (lifetime warranty and still breezes through MOTs)...rolling roaded at 200.0bhp :)

Brand new aircon compressor and 12 month old pump so the air is as cold as you like, electric heated leather seats, climate control etc.....

Now that looks pretty nice!

Although i'd be skeptical....what happens if that bad luck, you seem to be having, transfers to the new owner?! ;)

let me put my bad luck into perspective....i drove my sister's N reg clio which has done 120k miles and has had nothing go wrong with it....i had it for 2 days and the alternator died on me :p had that fixed and now my dad drives it, and nothing has gone wrong since.

typical. :p

Also, there are more money on the car in bits than selling whole, but i dont have the time or space to do that, could get £500 just for the engine mods, let alone the exhaust, body kit, wheels, suspension, interior etc....so should the worst happen :p But it's running solidly now anyway.

Yes you can get a wicked car for the money but can you afford to run a big old merc or the like?

Get a 1.25 16V Fiesta. absolutely wicked engines and cheap to run and insure and will sit at 70mph on a motorway all day long

rg tom, how much for a 21 year old to insure that you reckon? i'm guessing around £1k TPFT. 1 year NCB.
