Hi all -

After years of finding that taking photos with a compact never results in the image I want, I decided to take the plunge into the D-SLR world and got myself a shiny new Pentax K200D with a couple of lenses (Pentax 18-55 AL, Tamron 70-300 Di LD). Am loving the camera, it feels really good in my hands, is easy to operate whilst still having every feature I will ever use; and is also weather/dust resistant. Not one to do things the sensible way, I only got hold of it two days before flying out to the southwest of France for a week, which leads onto some of my lessons learned:

  • Never get a new camera just before you go on holiday. Reading the manual on the plane and not playing with the new toy before you go leads to a lot of duff shots!
  • I suck at exposure - most shots were either under or over, but it's my own fault (see above)
  • The screen on the back of the camera isn't much use for reviewing shots - might take my laptop on holiday next time!
  • DON'T accept a 1.2l petrol Corsa as your hire car. I had camper vans trying to over take me....

Having said this, i did manage to get some pics that i like, C&C welcome.

Nice set of pics you took there!

I particularly like the last one (number 8), but then I like that sort of composition so not surprising really!

You and the K200 have a good future me thinks!

How much of a good reflection could you have had in the window in no4?
Anyone think that could have made a good picture (if you can see what i'm saying)?

really love 1. but i love a good candid shot very nice was the cam in auto mode as u have moved from point and click cams?

I think that's a painting...

Lol, yes it is a scene painted onto a flat wall; there are 5 windows that are real, everything else (roof tiles, staircase, the reflection etc) is painted!

ic0n - I was messing around with the various settings, about the only one I didn't use was full auto :p

Thanks for the comments guys!

very nice, beats ducks for first photos ;)

I think they are all pretty nicely composed and metered, dont think there are any that I dislike.

Personal favourites are 3 and 8, but I think thats my type of photography.

Looks like a nice place to visit :)

How are you finding the 4 3rds system? I keep shying away from it because I wanted to do more wide angle work if I bought a DSLR and I know that the way the system is made it means theres not much wide angle possibilities. (edit: comparatively)

It's actually an APS-C sensor rather than a 4/3rds - 23.5mm x 15.7mm. Still think I need a decent WA lens in the future though, will have to wait till the bank balance recovers :p Wouldn't hesitate to recommend it (bearing in mind my lack of experience :D) - about the only thing it seems to lack is a really quick drive speed, but that doesn't bother me.

Zenitar 16mm Fish eye lens is quite fun WA and not too expensive. £70 from Russian on eekbay.

I really like 1, 2 and 3. A couple of things I'd change; the woman's red coat is a bit bright and distracting in 1, and 6 looks too saturated.
