I might be forced to go the LCD route and while gaming has improved watching movies on a LCD is still so poor

i went around my mates house to check out his new LCD (LG L227WT)

now for windows and games the monitor is "acceptable" (and i love my CRTs)
but when we tried to playback some divx/xvid files it looked terrible
instant dealbreaker

at first i thought probably because its a low rez tv rip so we put a dvd in.
while the dvd looked "ok" when played at its native res the moment we went fullscreen it looked almost as bad as the xvid files

then i tought i we should try some 720p H264 files and while the picture improved i could still clearly see artifacts

why is it like this

You will probably find that the contrast is on 100% on the LCD Television , this makes the response time of the panel greater , try reducing the contrast and the picture quality will improve , also the LG tv's have an XD Engine which filters noise out of the picture , but the filter also affects the FPS of the panel.

Basically adjust all the settings of the picture ie contrast , sharpness , colour etc until the picture improves. I have an LG TV which i use for gaming on my pc and ps3 and the picture quality is spot on , when watching DIVX through my DVD Player it needs a slight adjustment but the picture quality is still great compared to other brands of lcd's.

Because 720p is 1366 x 720 or so, while the monitor is 1680x1050 so it is still enlarged a considerable amount.

DVD's look nasty on modern stuff, thats why the HD formats are coming out.

well, playing divx on a high res screen is asking for trouble. ffdshow would go some way to improving things but come on...its a low quality highly compressed video. its not going to be bluray.

regardless of that though, the 720p files you tried....what soft of artifacts are you talking about? its easy to spot a compression artifact but a little less easier to explain what they look like lol. any pics or anything?

i wouldnyt go that far lol, some of them are still very good:)

dont be watching 600x300 rips on a 22 inch screen then, even dvd's will be stretched. this does not make it a bad monitor.

YOUR DOING IT WRONG

Would dropping down to the 20inch version improve things

my CRT is getting worse and i dont think it will last the week

My personal opinion is that Video can look better as long as the tft doesn't have a tn-panel - then the viewing angles are better (I find even a minor variation on tn makes them look terrible/washed out). And a good monitor with 1000:1 contrast actually looks far better to me than my previous 17" CRT, however that was not a high end CRT.

If the video source is crappy then a bigger screen definitely doesn't help, however I'd say anything above DVD quality should look good. It certainly does on my OcUK 24" widescreen.

Just don't watch movies like the 12 monkeys on a 20"+ My god, the video bitrate on that is horrendous. Brilliant movie, awful picture.

Edit: Another one to add to the list is Conspiracy Theory and Goldeneye.
