Last upgrade was over 2 year ago, out of touch...

As above, my last upgrade saw me a nice x1800xt, however i feel that it is now struggling with the latest games, i would like to purchase cod4 and vegas2, however i just feel that my card will make the games a bit trashy to play.

If you have £100ish budget what would you reccomend? At the moment i play on my 32" LCD, however thats because my desk broke and i have no where to stick my 17" lcd.

I assume the 32" LCD is around 720p ish? In which case I'd try them with your X1800XT. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Edit: An 8800GT will be great but possibly overkill at relatively low resolution in those games.

I wouldn't the 9800GT is an overclocked 8800GT! so go for a 8800GT its the best choice for sure.
