i have organised a sensible pension
life insurance
and contents insurance for all the kit in my house

i feel pretty pleased with myself

my pc,tv,consoles, audio equipment and bikes are also insured for accidental damage

i cant believe how long i put this off for

wish i had done it sooner

I dont see the relationship between buying a load of insurance products and growing up

Infact surely the older you get the less likely you are to accidently damage your TV. I mean huh? Why would you insure a TV against accidental damage?! It's a TV! It sits in the corner!

I dont know anyone who has ever accidently damaged their TV.

exactly, it's probably cheaper to rent a tv and get a nice spangly upgrade every 6 months.

Whilst I agree with the above in principal, life assurance and a decent pension plan do NOT fall into the above category of "useless" policies ;)

You feeling better now that you have a big hole in your pocket/bank account? :D
Saying that, i've had to claim 3 times in 4 years, all legit, and without the insurance i would have been shafted.
I know a few folk who have 'accidentally' damaged their old tv, because they have a new for old policy! ;)

*raises hand*
well to be fair i didnt do it, but a mate destroyed my tv by knocking it off a high cabinet, that being said didnt bother claiming off the insurance, just bought a new one

OT: I have today been decidedly ungrown up and spent the entire afternoon not working and sat flicking between forums and facebook

I wouldn't necessarily insure a TV specifically, but if it's part of your household contents insurance then that seems fine by me.

I can easily afford the £15 p/month or whatever it is I pay for mine, and the peace of mind that it offers me makes it worthwhile, imo.

I've taken digital photos of everything I would be claiming against, if necessary, and have these stored off-site in case I need to refer to them.

As for the pension... this is a bit trickier to justify, but I still have one and have been paying into it for the past 10 years. Whether it'll be worth anything in 30 years' time is anyone's guess.

The only thing I'll insure properly is a car or house - only insure things you cannot afford to replace otherwise over the years you end up paying more in insurance than you would to replace the items and as when you lost or broke them.

Yeah, but these days console controllers are wireless, and as such they lack the very wire that prevented them from reaching the TV when that fit of rage takes over. :)

What if, as has happened to family and friends, you have a plumbing-related disaster or an accidental house fire? You surely cannot afford to replace all of the damaged contents (such as furniture, electricals, kitchen units perhaps) in one go, which is where Contents Insurance comes into its own. Buildings insurance only really tends to cover the actual structure of the property - once that is all patched up you can either sit on your damp / smokey furniture or have your insurance company roll up with a fat cheque for some new stuff.

For the absolute pittance it costs (insuring something like £80k of contents) for about £200 a year its absolutely worth the piece of mind IMO.

Accidents DO happen.

Contents insurance seemed a waste of money to me. I was paying £15 a month for something that hadn't happened yet. It didn't give me peace of mind, just made me think that I was spending £15 a month on nothing. I think partly the reason is that I don't own any items of great value.
