Virgin's New STM Policy

a household of 4 networked computers 4 kids could easily hit the limit within 1 hour. its limiting just a bit more than pirates, and if you think the limits were brought in as a anti pirating measure, then your very short sighted.

It's a combination of both infrastructure and piracy problems... Providers are covering themselves to some extent, there will be a shakeup I'm sure in the future.

Even with 4 PCs on a home network, it's no big deal.. I remember having a home network of that size with only 600k 1st gen DSL.. was fine for normal use.

The whole way the industry is going is the word 'unlimited' is to be taken with a pinch of salt.. but hey, you pay a 'limited' subscription to the service, it's unreasonable to think that buys you unlimited use. (and for many heavy users illegal use)

Of course not, but you don't download a CoH patch every day constantly ?, It would hardly effect you.. sure you may have to wait abit longer for your download.

As TV on demand and other streaming content becomes more common they will have to rethink and start traffic shaping based on types of traffic. But I guess atm they are doing it the cheap way.

Hardly affect me?, It affects me everytime I need to do a large-ish download, how is that hardly? Why the hell should I have to wait for my download, I pay for a 4Mb/sec unlimited connection and the first time I need to download a sizeable file I am STM'd, why should I be at all happy about it.

so what are these everyday huge files your grabbing ?, just out of interest. Maybe you are a rare user that does this legally... most however are not. I'm a heavy net user, and I can hand on heart not remember the last > 1GB file I grabbed.

Of course it's a big deal, they are failing to supply the service that was agreed, they changed the service and while they have a clause in the contract you can bet that anybody wishing to end the contract early will be let out as they damn well know it is out of order.

Sorry, why should I take the word unlimited with a pinch of salt? Unlimited by it's very definition is unlimited, if they wish to limit it then they should sell it as such.

so your saying what was normal for you back then ( whatever year that was ) should be the same norm for everyone who has a internet connection ?

that's a very silly thing to say. really , it is.

Where did I say everyday?

Your not paying enough money for 'unlimited', they can change their minds...they have lawyers and small print to allow them to. It's their business. I'd prefer it to be limited rather than the whole cable business cease to exist.

your mixing up heavy user with regular user. if you cannot remember the last >1 gig file you downloaded , then your not a heavy user i.e 'a user who downloads large amount of files on a regular basis'.

well im not happy with the changes...it will force more people over to sky or bethere.

Go to sky then, more bandwidth for 'normal' people ;)

Only kidding... but I think everyone complaining here needs to look at the bigger picture. Nothing in life is for free, not if it's there for a profit :)

Your not paying enough money for 'unlimited'

why isnt he paying enough if he is paying the advertised price ? i dont get it

i pay 18 and i get 2.1mb download which is unlimited as i can download all day long if i want. i only pay the advertised price...im not paying extra so why should someone else

Don't assume things, and yes it is a big deal because I am not getting the service that was agreed.

Thats life m8 :( ...I think you'll find they are well within legal rights. If they are not then fair play, see them in court, but good luck with that.

Lucky thing for us is we are consumers, we can shop around.. just find another service.

I think VM is still pretty good, and from my experience with them and NTL have been far better in most respects to the fiasco that is DSL.

if there were a 'bigger picture' you would be the last person to see it, all what you have said here have been assumptions and generalisations.

you just making this up as you go along ?

why im with bethere...they are the best isp out there...they give what they advertise and dont care what you download/when you download and how much you download

VM are not making enough money to keep up with growing demands on infrastructure.. they need to draw the line (are in their rights to do so). Piracy is making matters worse.

Errr no, I was just trying to explain that a normal internet user is not really hit bad by these changes. I'm not IT God, but I have worked in the technical side of IT for 21 years.. so I'm also no fool blinkered into thinking unlimited cheap internet is just that and I have some right to it. It's just not realistic..
