I'm sure I read somewhere that, if you had an OEM copy of Vista x86, you could obtain an x64 licence for the same version for a mininal fee from MS.

Is this true or was I dreaming it?

Nope (it says Retail, but don't worry - stick your key in and if you're allowed to order a DVD, it'll let you). :)

No idea if an OEM key works in that online ordering section, but as far as I'm aware the media is all the same anyway, whether it's OEM or Retail licenses.

Suppose it is best to get from the OEM page though. :)

Im also interested in this as I made the mistake of just installing 32-bit without ordering 64-bit as I couldn't be bothered to wait :D

I will see if my key works with this thing.

Edit: Just reading through the FAQs etc and noticed this:

If you are currently running Windows XP on your PC you can determine if the PC has a 32- or 64-bit processor by following these steps:

1. From the Start menu select "My Computer"
2. From the "My Computer" window select "View system information"
3. From the "System Properties" window select the "Advanced" tab
4. From the "Advanced" tab click the "Environment Variables" button
5. Look through the "System variables" list for a variable called "PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE". If this PC has a 32-bit processor this variable will have a value of "x86". If it has a 64-bit processor this variable will have a value of "x64".

I did this in Vista and the PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE is x86. I presume this is just because thats the vista im running now. Is the E6300 64-bit?

Edit2: It also says the product key I have entered is invalid :S I took the product key off the COA sticker. Checked for errors.

There's a link in the sticky to order 64 bit OEM media.

It's not the same method as getting retail media.

you don't ened to pay anything, just get hold of a vista 64bit disc, and choose the same version when installing (ie, home premium, business ,or ultimate, whichever you paid for) same key will work fine

I was referring to this link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326246 at the bottom of the sticky.

Ok Thanks. I have looked there but I can't see where I can get a 64-bit copy, it says if it is OEM to contact your system builder but I am the system builder so what does a system builder do to get the copy sent out? Sorry if im missing the obvious, Would you mind explaining?

Thanks

I must feel like a right pain right now... That link doesn't work, it just gives the error:

What does that mean?
