8800GT Borked. Does 3rd Party Cooler Void Warranty?

I switched my machine on this morning to find that my 8 week old 8800GT had fallen over.

It had been overclocked a little and was stable with a big Thermalright heatsink on it.

At the time, I was not gaming etc....

Now I do have the old cooler but have ramsinks on the card. I will pull them off and clean them as much as I can.

Has anyone else been in this situation and had to send it back and did you get a replacement even though a 3rd party cooler had been fitted?

I bought it from a retail shop not far from me so will be taking it back to the shop tomorrow.

Yes adding a cooler voids the warranty.

Its now your ethical choice...:p

Damit :(

Well, I might as well fit the old cooler, clean up the RAM and pray that they dont notice. :D

I will fight my corner as they have a glass cabinet full of VGA coolers so they better be ready for a good banter.

Will take my Credit Card just in case.

i doubt they really check these things, as long as the original cooler is on and looks normal i doubt they'll care, RMAed and EVGA 8800GTS (G80) a while back due to severe snowy things, they got back to me saying the core was borked and sent me G92 8800GTS as a replacement! worth noting the card i sent back had aftermarket cooler on it for its entire life, are you RMAing it back to manufacturer?

EVGA allow aftermarket coolers though?
I dont know where this started from, but I'm still not sure if its true, their warranty does state "cards that have been physically modified cannot be processed" etc. But I recall hearing it from before.

Btw, my EVGA 8800gt packed in after 6 months perfect operation (with the thermalright gt cooler on it) so I was asking the exact same question.

I will update you if my RMA is successful.

I have a 1 year warranty with the retail shop and I have only had the card 8 weeks max.

When I first got the card, I took it out and the cooler was loose. When I went to tighten one of the screws, the bolt actually snapped.

That was part of the reason I bought an aftermarket cooler in the first place. Also to get better temps.

I have had to use 3 of the Thermalright screws to put the stock cooler back on and it looks fine. I managed to get all the paste off the RAM so that was a blessing.

Ethically, there's nothing wrong with RMAing or getting it replaced. It's not as if you broke the card by crushing the core with the new heatsink. In my opinion, the reason they say warranty is void if you change heatsinks is so they can cover themselves if some one foolishly breaks the card while installing the new heatsink.

Yeah I do see your point.

If they are to sell aftermarket coolers which the Retail shop I bought the card from does, I would assume as long as there is no actual damage to the VGA Card, a replacement should be given.

I've replaced a stock cooler and RMA'd a GFX card before, although didn't try it on the 6800GT I bought from OcUK :P

Well, I took into the shop today and explained that when I first origionally got the card, one of the bolts snapped as the cooler was loose and I tried to tighten it. I had to drill out a further 2 to get the right bolts in and have it fixed properly.

They did advise me that as the cooler had actually broke, as long as there was no damage to the card itself, a replacement would be no problem.

He then told me that as they do not stock them anymore, it will take 2 weeks for a replacement to be sent out.

I had to resort to buying a £20 7200GS to keep me going until then. :(

Wahay, maximum FPS on FSX then.
