Top 5 Footballers of Your Lifetime

Beckenbauer?

He wasn't bad, he was an expert at what he did (but not as good as Maldini or Ferdinand). Someone did name Mathaus though!

It was the cheat bit I was specifically mentioning :) I can't remember him as a player.

great thread and very difficult to choose.

Zidane

Maradona

R. Baggio

Henry

L. Ronaldo

Difficult to put them in order... because every single one of them on their game has turned a game via an utterly sublime piece of skill or carried their team. In any case they are an absolute joy to watch play and every time they get the ball you get a sense that the impossible can happen.
For number 1. Its very hard to choose between Zidane and Maradona. Possibly Maradona edges it...

honourable mentions: McCoist, B. Laudrup, Maldini, Berkgamp

Ferdinand? Are you joking? Beckenbauer was better than Maldini and Ferdinand put together.

Not at all. Look at who Maldini and Ferdinand are up against these days, the standard of players are streets ahead on average.

Ferdinand has, this season gone, put in the finest consistent defensive showing from any defender I've EVER seen. Every game was like a masterclass.

The same Leonardo who almost killed an American by elbowing him full in the face at USA '94?

Every decent player has done something silly in his life, Zidane could have killed Materazzi headbutting him in the stomach, he could have been left breathless!

The difference was that it was a clear elbow that had the American fitting on the floor, foaming at the mouth and I believe he also swallowed his own tongue.

1. Zidane - No explanation needed.
2. Ronaldo - Reinvented the way a striker should play. Frighteningly good, and IMO, very well might have gone on to become the best ever if not for the injuries.
3. Bergkamp -A pure footballing brain, and a striker's dream partner. When he's on the ball you move and he'll find you. Everytime.
4. Rivaldo - A magician, with a wand-like left foot. Incredibly good, and in that season with Barcelona he was the best player in the world.
5. Riquelme - Passing most players can only dream of. Love watching him play.

Maradonna - the cheating diego swine
Zidane
Gazza
Ronaldo - goofy one
Hoddle

A little biased I suppose with Hoddle, I was going to put Maldini but defenders are so boring and Hoddle was a genius.

Chris Waddle - oh sod it. So entertaining. There have been better players but I'd rather watch him than anyone else.
Yeah I'm a huge Waddle fan aswell... guy was immense!

Surprised so many players have gone for Riquelme over other players of the same role, notably Paul Scholes.

Scholes has been the best English midfielder of the last 10 years and is an incredible passer of the ball but Riquelme is even better. I remember his display against England a while back. A total masterclass. He's an utter genius.

Proper Ronaldo
Berkamp EDIT - maybe Maradona...though he was nearing the end when I started watching football.
Van Basten
Zidane
Keane (would have gone for Viera - but Keane did it for longer)

I'm sorry, Riquelme isn't as good as Scholes. Riquelme has had 1 season of total dominance in a season in a top league where Villareal did very well. Scholes has consistently been incredible for over a decade.
