For me, the only reason to feel the need to put faith in a higher power, which doesn't have so much as a shred of evidence to support it (God) would be from a deep seeded insecurity.

It's doing nothing of the sort, science simply shows the easiest possible way to achieve something that fits predictive data. It doesn't do anything else.

That's what you think, but that's not what a lot of religious people think. There not insecure, they haven't be brainwashed. They included scientists and intelligent people etc. etc. etc.
Where there's a lack of knowledge there is always speculation, it's quite easy to say "it's this great omniscient, omnipresent etc. being that looks after us" rather than just saying "we don't know".
