this is maybe not the most original place to ask about this but I'm guessing someone will know... :)

1...can I wear jeans/t shirt ? I think I only have 1 pair of black trousers and err no shirts !

2..I understand I go there in the morning and then may or may not get picked, how do the jurors get picked ?

Translation - So I can do the things that will make sure I don't get picked :p

normally you need to dress up fairly smart i.e shirt, trousers, shoes etc and normally all the majority of the jurors are used i think one of you will be a subsitute so to speak in case someone is unable to attend

The jury is picked at random from the pool, subject to challenges from the Defence. I can't tell you whether wearing Casual makes you more or less likely to get picked. I also can't see a reason to dress up for something you have been forced into. Bear in mind that you're going to spend a lot of time listening to boring people droning on and dress for comfort.

yeah I'm not going to go dressed like a tink, but I'm not really in to buying clothes specifically for it! if there's no need

it's just the sheriff court btw, if that makes any difference

The defendant will be asked it he is happy with the panel, so if you walk in making cut-throat gestures, chanting 'send him to the gallows!', chances are you will be declined by the defence

Your 21 and haven't got anything reasonably smart in your wardrobe?

Lol at the above. :p

I had jury service about 2 years ago now and i just used to go in smart jeans and shirt. The selection is random IIRC. You will just sit around in a common room and then you might get called down. They will ask the defendent and you if you know them..etc or any other reason you wouldnt be suitable to serve. Of all those that get called down, there will be 3-5 that arent required and sent back upstairs. In 2 weeks i was on 1 case that lasted 3 days.

i did jury duty about a month or 2 ago.

don't get dressed up, you will stick out like a sore thumb!! you can wear whatever you like - jeans and t-shirt is fine.
you will turn up on the day, watch a video and then wait around until you are called for a case - you may get one soon, or you may be waiting for days. I got on one at 3.40pm on my first day and it lasted the full 2 weeks.
you might get a short one or if its a long one you will be asked if there is any reason why you cannot do a long one - a really good excuse is needed - a work related one won't be enough (although i got out of a 6 week case earlier in the day with a work excuse - long story)

i actually enjoyed doing it, but take a book just in case you are waiting for long time to get on a case.

As long as your clean and you will be alright casual, when you go in you give them your name then you wait in a room with every one else a man comes in with a list of names and you may be called, then they tell you if you can go home if not picked sometimes no cases for a couple of days so you may be asked to come back either two days time or not at all or you could turn up every day and not get called sometimes you are there all day just waiting you are allowed out dinner time. If you get picked you go through sit in the jury seats and then you still could be sent back if they don't like look of you all. then it could last a day two or even three weeks good luck.:D

so i'm there for 2 weeks regardless ?

and yeah I have 'reasonably smart' clothes, no shirts or ties though....all polo shirts etc

edit - hadn't read the last few posts, cheers people :)

What's the notice period for getting called up for jury duty? I take it all employers MUST give time off?

yep, its the law

Can you get out of it by claiming to be a racist xenophobe with a hatred for everyone?

nope, you will be charged with contempt of court.

couple of funny things happened when i was there - in one case a jury member fell asleep and the judge sent him down to the cells for a while to wake up.
In another a woman jury member was late coming back from lunch - the judge asked why and she said she was shopping - shopping where? - harvey nichols in the sale - what did you buy he asked - this dress she replied - how much did it cost? - £400 she replied - well its just cost you another £400 in fines the judge replied.
so don't annoy the judge!

I've done jury duty twice.

Dress casual and comfortable. Bring along one piece of thick clothing that you can use a a cushion. ;)

Depending on the system used, you may not even have to go to the courtroom in the morning. In Manchester, jurors are given a number and each morning jurors phone up a recorded message which then lists off which jurors are needed by their allocated number.
