Following on from the 'how much you take home' thread.

How do people here generally feel about people asking you how much you earn? I mean, I start my new job this week and when I handed in my notice as my last job people immediately started asking how much I'd be earning. People I barely know in some cases.

Personally, I don't tend to answer or just give as vague a response that I can to the people that, IMO, shouldn't be asking me. If it's family or a good friend then I just tell them - but only if they ask!

You?

I really couldn't care, if people don't want to say that's fair enough. But anyone can ask me how much I take home. I don't see why it matters.

It annoys me when people ask that. My girlfriend or my parents I can allow and even my sister, but friends or anyone else it's none of their business.

I dont tell people. It's a secret :)
I get annoyed too when my wife talks about my wages to people. It's no ones business but mine.

Depends on the scenario. If a workmate asks me what I earn, I don't tell them, but if it's a mate or even a complete stranger, I'll tell them.

Makes no difference to me, and I'm from Yorkshire, so I don't have any hang-ups about talking about money.

doesnt bother me to tell folk my salary but you know you get folk who genuinly wanna know what you get for the type of job you have...then there is the bitter few who wanna know if they make more money than you?

Unless you are ashamed of what you earn, perhaps you feel you've not met your aspirations or something, I really don't see the problem unless you are in a situation whereby you are paid more than others for the same work and it could cause problems.

It generally doesn't bother me, was maybe a little uncomfortable with it in my old job because it wasn't that much.

Jealousy plain and simple, people tend to be envious of you if you have a good job. That's why I tend to avoid talking about earnings apart with close friends.

I think people asking is pretty common these days, a sort of "is mine bigger than yours?" mentality. It's really down to what you feel comfortable telling people, some people just don't care, either because they earn plenty or don't mind what people know. Others do mind and are very careful what people know about them, it's hard to blame them really.

Ok, for he people who said that hey wouldn't tell anyone how much they earn if they got asked, why do you want to keep it secret?

It also works the other way, though, when you earn much more. Some people can be incredibly jealous. It's quite ridiculous really, so it's often easier not to say.

Naturally I'm not necessarily talking about myself as I've never had a particularly amazingly paid job (well, last years jammy Summer job doesn't count) but my parents have been in awkward situations and it's pathetic.
