Wisdom Teeth. Anyone had them removed?

So it looks like I may have to have my bottom two wisdom teeth removed as they are growing horizontally into my other teeth forcing them out of the way; when they should be growing upwards.

Has anyone here had their wisdom teeth removed before? How was it and what was the procedure?

I had one removed after it went bad. Three attempts it took. Was the most painful few weeks I've had. First attempt the antibiotics hadn't had an affect so when the dentist went to remove it I had to tell her to stop - the tool jammed down the side of my bad tooth and hit a nerve - my lord was that painful! Second week: pretty much the same but part of the tooth broke off. Third attempt was successful - but tooth broken apart again. It felt like she was pulling my jaw out of my head!!

In summary: bad luck fella!

Had two and an abscess cut out of my jaw under a general, wasn't in any pain at the time but took two weeks to recover fully with regards to what I could eat and the chipmunk syndrome.

Apparently I was restless coming out of the anesthesia, punched a nurse, tried to stand up, fainted then bled horribly all over my pillow. Woke up an hour later, oblivious to my previous attempt to come round with my face joined to the pillow. Oh, cotton wool sticks hanging out your mouth is a good look btw. :D

Contrary to my experience above, it's a good thing to get done sooner rather than later and will save you some potential misery in the future. I'm sure yours will go a lot smoother than mine did.

had the option to have one removed at the dentist or all of them under general in hospital, i took the second option was off work for 10 days and the stitches were horrible :( but worth it the pain from the first was awful.

You sure you guys went to the dentists, and not accidently the butchers?

My boss had his out a few weeks back, he had 2 weeks off work and had to have his jaw broken :/

When you say he had to have his jaw broken, do you mean they actually had to break his jaw or it was more of a by product of them yanking his teeth out?

Mine were growing horizontal like yours (looks very bizarre on the x-ray!) and so went with general anesthetic at hospital and had all four out. I was in first thing in the morning, woke up mid afternoon and was home for tea. Apparently I was very merry when they wheeled me back onto the ward but I can't remember much of that!

Very surprised to read that some were able to blag 2 weeks off work, I think I was off for 2 days waiting for the swelling to go down and to stop looking like a Hamster!

One tip, avoid rice afterwards, it kept on getting lodged in the holes which didn't feel too nice. You may also hear some stories of people having a bruised chest due to the surgeon having to kneel on it to get the leverage to yank them out :p

Had lower left removed a few years back after it had decayed.

Refused to go into hospital to have it out, and asked just for normal injection (as I had a nasty scare at a dentist when 12 when an Ambulence was nearly called due to me not waking & hate being put to sleep)

Female dentist was brilliant. She even straddled my chair, with one leg up and the other on the floor for leverage - as she stuck a flat head screwdriver instrument into the back of my jaw, twisted it and snapped the offending Item out like a piece of glass (after 3 injections into my gum)

I had my Bottom set taken out when I was 20 & had a driving lesson the same day, my instructor said it was the best lesson I had so far! :D

The top set came trough last year (age 41) don't think these will have to come out though

I had my wisdon teeth removed about 6 years ago (aged 20). The experience was unpleasant and painful, however not as bad as the terrible tooth ache that I had suffered from for several months beforehand.

My top left wisdom tooth had to come out as I cracked it in half :/ Was painful till I had it out, then it felt odd for a bit and then it was fine.

I think I need the top right one and bottom right out now though :(

Had all 4 removed at once, under general anaesthetic. Excellent dental surgeon, and he did a briliant job. Waking up is the worst part (conscious but unable to move; very scary!) followed by two days of blood clotting in your mouth.

But I was eating pizza four days later. :D

I still have mine, but no one I know that has had theirs removed, has said it was anything other than a bad experience. I can only hope mine stay where they are for a while.

Had it done twice. First time I couldnt open my mouth for 2 weeks and was on fluids. Try to imagine someone clobbering you with a baseball bat on either side of your jaw and you might get an idea of how it was afterwards.

Second it was like having a filling no probs at all.

Had 2 out aged 21, no real problems - anasthetic is good!

I didnt have any problems either, was sedated for the procedure and barely felt a thing. They were giving the second tooth quite a yank but i couldnt have cared less as the sedative effect was great! Liquid diet for a few days and i was back to normal after about a week.

I'm worried now - mine still haven't come through so I'm wondering what direction they are growing in!!!!
