"I don't want to get huge"

I wouldn't call myself huge (don't know what the other gym rats think) but I'd consider myself pretty strong with a powerful core. Being "big" doesn't mean you have to be weak either - it's mainly aesthetics anyway, I'm after both strength and size, and I'm getting there. :)

Once I hit a certain size it'll be entirely strength/training for fun from then on.

I'm natural and I plan on staying that way though so there's a long road ahead before any of that.

if you go the powerlifting route then its a good idea to have a weight category in mind and then try to stick to it. though remember that with strength you will naturally gain some more lean mass.

At the moment i'm around 63KG. That puts me in the 67.5KG category which means i've got a good 4KG of lean muscle to add (which frankly is a fair bit...)

I can't even consider powerlifting at the moment and probably not for a while (if ever) given my back. It all depends how that goes.

I know exactly what you guys mean, but I actually dont want to get 'huge', i've come to the conclusion that getting big is vastly overrated and serves no purpose really.

Actually you raise a good point, its almost like a desperation to try to impress...other men. Thats quite worrying don't you think?

I started out weight training for one reason only, more pulling power with the lasses :D Now i just want to see how far i can go with it, and i enjoy it. I think when it becomes an obsession though, it all gets a bit wierd.

That's over 1/2 a stone to gain. I reckon at your height that would put you looking flippin' awesome - I think you've made amazing progress as it is. :)

I'm doing a bit of both, size and strength building - it makes progress slower, but it keeps me motivated seeing progress on both sides of the disciplines. :)

I think having a health appetite for it (before it becomes an obsession) is perfectly healthy as it gives you that drive and aggression to succeed.

I know a lot of girls that don't like "big" guys, but prefer the wirey types - but that's never going to be me, so I might as well look as good as I can whilst getting stronger - if anything to feel more secure about myself. It gives me something to aim for too - I've reached decent levels in the other sports I play so I can now concentrate on another part of my life I can improve. :)

same for me, i wont ever be wirey or anything like that.
i like who i am though and women seem to like me :D

Yeah it would be fairly noticeable :)

I think if I switched to a strength oriented routine and got my weight up to that sort of level I wouldn't do too bad competing.

I just hope I can get these back problems sorted. It's irritating because they are a little random. I often get them at work when sitting a lot (I don't at home) so it could be my chair, but to be fair I sit up straight against the back of it so I really don't know.

I've got some imbalances though so hopefully fixing them will get me back on the way, i'm starting the physio properly on Saturday with regular appointments from then on I hope I can sort it all!

Seriously mate, you have a great/balanced attitude towards the iron game, no questions there :)

Along with Wardie, you've made fantastic gains in a relatively short space of time too.

This ^^^ is what most men, and their girlfriends, wanna see in the mirror when they take up bodybuilding. Some get addicted to the pump and go for arnie style hugeness. Others slim down for that bruce lee type 'balance' but most, in general want a torso like the guy in the pic above. And i can tell you right now that no one looks like that by accident. Thats years of hard work and dedication to diet and lifestyle. To look like that i would say would take 2-3 years MINIMUM especially if you started as a chubber. Lower end of the spectrum if you have god like genetics.

The "i dont want to get huge" thing annoys me too i actually get it personally, because in a shirt or tight tee i look a lot bigger than some folk, i often get comments like "dont you think you should stop before you get too big?" but if i took my shirt off those same people would tell me that my chest and arms both lacked mass to be 'impressive'. It does my head in that normal joe's dare to belittle my efforts that dominate over 50% of my conciousness day to day by 'worrying' that they might walk into a weight room and accidentally end up so big that they are distasteful to the opposite sex. i suppose its sad and i should laugh but it winds me up.

yep, they want that torso and think its easy, but look at the additional work that has had to be done - chest shoulders and arms are well developed, back will be also (you would bloody hope), legs should be looking good as well.

exactly, i get called huge by some peeps and im waaay smaller in the chest department than that guy, it always seems to be chest too, got a maximuscle flyer the other day and all the cover guys were looking great but the one thing i noticed was just how freaking huge their chests were compared to their arms. big freaking slabs of muscle, perfectly squared and even, but most arms looked about 16-17 inch max i asked my GF to look at me by comparison (which she replied well your fatter and less handsome, cheers ***) but she agreed that i was bigger than all but 2 of them but i had a comparitavley non-existant chest.

So basically the ideal cover model would train FB for about 1 year. Then eat sleep and breathe flyes and cable crosses before cutting down to about 8%bf

I'm sure they don't actually worry about it at all. They just realise they don't want to spend so long lifting weights regularly when the look/strength/whatever your goals are aren't what they aspire to.

no they do worry, they say "i want to go to the gym but i wont lift free weights because i dont want to get too big" or similar. Its not the semantics its the way that they imply that if by some miracle of genetics that they were the easiest gainer ever known, they would suddenly explode. Not that they would still need years of hard work and training JUST to get to a 'typically' aesthetic body.
They envision growing unsightly bulges and veins as thick as your fingers popping out all over the place if they dared do a deadlift. Its just ignorance and im sure its not intentional, but its just that peeps in the iron game take it personally

That sort of body is my short term goal, but i'd say I want a bit more size than that.

It will take a substantial level of effort where both training and especially diet are concerned to get a physique like that. Low body fat is even more difficult for certain people who will REALLY have to fight for it.

People do think that what's in that picture isn't difficult to achieve, but in reality there's some dedicated work gone into that. The good thing is, it's obtainable :)

I'm afraid that I'm "one of those" who say they don't want to get big but want to gain a little muscle, lose a little fat and just look more "defined".

ya but that isnt the issue here really, the issue would be like you coming up to me and saying "i dont want to lift like you do because i dont wanna get huge" unless you used steroids you would need about 1-2 years of training to be average, that means protein, egg whites, heavy weights and a strict routine. JUST to get to the level of the guy in the pic i posted. Knowing what you look like in RL i know that if you merely trimmed down for definition you would probably look very skinny almost malnourished. It takes a significant amount of muscle to look good cut down.

I'm 75Kg

I should have ripped off my shirt and flexed at the lan, I know you wanted me to ;) :p

Seriously, I think looks can be deceiving because your physique didn't show at all when I met you compared to your MSN pics.

yeah, my physique varies but i dont wear the tight tee's nor go topless at lans lol so we are probably in the same boat, 75kg is not a bad weight but that makes you 35kg lighter than me (a lot of which will be fat, agreed). What im saying is that:-

a) personal goals for size etc is not really what this thread is about, theres nothing wrong with being defined and lean.

b) you should never overestimate yourself, you (and by 'you' i mean everyone bar a select few) are fatter and smaller than you think.

Next time i demand shirt ripping gayness too :D

I'm always topless at my house but didn't think you guys would appreciate it :p

I'll take this to MSN as it's a bit off topic.
