So then, 5 or so grand these days... say you want a "hot hatch" and you need it to be reliableish, cheapish to run, around 200BHP, small to medium in size, not completely pathetic on fuel (30+ mpg average) etc.

A practical daily driver with a good turn of speed and hitting 100MPH in under 18 seconds ideally.

What would you buy?

All sounding like what I was thinking so far :)

Early Civic Type R (EK9 of course)
Clio 172 (not cup though, want luxuries lol)
Ibiza Cupra 1.8 20vt remapped to around 200BHP
Astra (MK4) GSi Turbo

Can't really think of many others that I like... a lot of powerful cars seem bloated weight-wise and so won't be too quick, all of the above seem sensible "quick car" choices.

Guess theres DC2 Teg's also but... not sure I'd want to go that old :)

If you're wanting it to be a driver involving car, destined for B-road blasting, get the 182.

If you're wanting a daily driver that will be used for longer distances, including motorway/dual carriageway, get something else.

If you end up in the "something else" category, a Leon Cupra (180bhp), and then add a remap :D

Sounds quite good, will have a look @ the 182's :)

Had experience of all but the Astra GSi turbo's through friends cars.

172 cup, brill power delivery, felt very torquey and rev'd hard. Good fun :) Not the best quality inside, think the door cards are the biggest let down but I could live with it. Bit twitchy at speed but hard suspension and short wheelbase - bound to happen.

Civic Type R... quick, but very composed with it. Mega stable at speed but didn't feel as "alive" as I expected. The 172 cup was a teeeeeeeny bit quicker in a straight line. Friend had a lot of niggles to be sorted under warranty which was surprising for a Honda lol.

Ibiza Cupra... not the best quality interior, quite boring power delivery for a turbo'd car... poor handling as standard, but not a bad car and 250 quid to get 200BHP. I do like them, on some good suspension and a good quality remap (my mate went to a dodgy backstreet garage company lol) I'm sure they'd be a good choice.

Teg Type R - fun fun fun :D But just a bit old? Look the business too.

Where did you test drive an EK9? and was the Clio you said was faster fully standard?

True, but I don't think hot hatches should be about luxuries personally :D

Me neither, but do we mean things like cruise control and satnav? Mine's got aircon and folding mirrors but not exactly luxuries..oh and a cupholder:p

Hey the Octavia vRS is a hatchback, and its quite warm. As above add a remap, a rear ARB and a torque damper bush and youre away. Lots of kit too.

Youd get a very good one for 5k.

lol lotus sunbeams are cool... but living where I live, it'd probably be hotwired and gone for dust in 10 mins :)

Never thought about an Octavia but guessing the weight of the thing will have a negative effect on it's performance? Will have a look into them anyway.

Civic and Clio were 2 friends cars, just tried them out locally. The Clio had a decat, catback exhaust, pipercross viper closed induction kit. Civic was bog standard bar a fancy brand induction kit, mushroom jobbie, HKS I think.

As for luxuries... well, decent security, usual electrics, nice lights maybe lol it'd do me. ABS would be very useful too with my luck haha.

What do people think to Pug 206 GTI 180's? I hear a lot of differing opinions regarding the performance of these...

Rigid suspension and rock hard seats are the first things that spring to mind. The one my brother inlaw owned used to have a tendancy to disconnect some linkage between the gear lever and the gearbox if you tried an enthusiastic change. You can fix it at the side of the road by popping it back in place but it doesn't sound too promising!

Another vote for the Mk4 Astra GSI.

I do really love the look of Astra GSI turbos, they look spot on to me, I'd not really want to change a thing! Bar a remap of course :)

A friend of mines just brought one, also gone from a lowly Corsa Sport 1.6 like mine so I'll have to go have a proper look at it, I think they look really classy for a Vauxhall haha. I am a bit of a Vauxhall nut though (should I shamefully admit?!) and nice torquey power delivery low down would be ideal for a daily driver :)

if you dont mind a bit of mileage you'll get a Leon Cupra R,

210 brake standard remaps to circa 260 for 400 quid :)

30+mpg if you drive sensibly (i'm sitting on 34.5 mpg atm with a mix of motorway blatting and b road fun (although i've had it down as far as 20mpg over a tank.

plenty of standard kit (loads of toys and a decent stereo) its also a practical 5 door hatch,

although as i said stretches the budget as you wont find many under 6k but heres 2 for you
