Hi Guys,

I’m looking for some advice on a car for my fiancé. She is finding her current Toyota Celica a bit harsh on the old fuel biils and is looking for something more economical. Her parents have suggested one of the following as a replacement to get her to uni and back.

Vauxhall Corsa 1.3 R reg
Fiat Punto 1.3 T reg
Suzuki Swift 1.3 R reg

I suggested the Swift as it is jap made so reliable, i have owned a Punto and didn’t think much of the handling and the Corsa well i just don’t like them lol.

What would be the best out of these options, the budget is under a grand. Or is there other models we should be considering that are good on fuel economy?

Thanks

as above and as most other people will say, the 1.25 fez. its practically jap itself ;)

or just to make sure, the mazda 121... exact same car :p

third vote for the Fez, not sure if its the most eco of the 4 but it'd be the quickest and probably nicest to drive. The 1.25 fiesta is acutally a better engine than ford's 1.4.

What sort of mpg values does she get at the moment?

Not sure on her MPG exactly but she has come iin moaninag about only getting 40 miles for a tenner's worth of fuel. I'll need to ask her.

At £1.10 Per litre she would be getting 19.9 MPG. That’s pretty harsh tbh , but you cant measure economy over 40 miles.

I'd suggest you make sure first though and compare to official figures just in case something's wrong with the car. Better the devil you know if the Celica is otherwise fine. What engine size/model is it?

Ought to be getting at least 30mpg as long as its not mostly conjested city driving I reckon?

How does she drive it?
Where does she drive it?
How much does she drive it?
When was it last serviced?

I’m getting a Mini cooper D as it gets at minimum 50 MPG but I’m trading in my 99 Honda Civic 1.4 only done 67K and not one bit of trouble and looks fantastic down to me being sadly into detailing, even the insurance is only £21 a month full comp. tell her she can have it, Honda build quality four doors , good boot. 1K.

oh wait I've not found my Mini yet :D

I get around 38-42 MPG in it, 17lt around £20 gets me 156miles I should know when the price jumped i thought my car was ****** till i did the math.
Your real-world MPG average is 40.42, covering 156 miles using 3.86 gallons of fuel.
Friend puts in £120 a week now in his new Range Rover, madness cost him 64K for that I’d want it to run on water.

Don't tell me you are buying a seriously more expensive diesel car purely because it has better fuel economy?

Yep, some people are monumentally stupid. Big loan payment and depreciation - Hello!

I'm so tempted to sell the Furby to some unsuspecting idiot for a mega price just because "it's a Diesel innit".

Nope the Honda I bought from new and I’ve had it eight years. I’m just not one of those change my car kind of guys, as long as it looks ok and runs I’m happy. Friends of mine have had seriously 40 cars between the two of them in the same time I’ve had 1

I decided just to get something new and the Mini appealed as we have a brand new Top of the range Focus as a company car I wanted something I could enjoy. Been in everything from Astons to Zephers but the mini impressed me.

So when I went to look at a Cooper the fact the D can get 60+ MPG on a run was a factor plus £20 road Tax.

Respect to your thought but that’s your position. The Mini is a cash purchase with no loan and is currently the best car for depreciation just now, Road tax is £20 this year nothing next. I plan to keep it anyway for years so every time the price at the pumps jump it will make better sense.

Also with extended TLC its service free for eight years.

I could go out and get anything so I could lose on a brand new Audi TT does that make better sense?

But to tie it back in my Honda has never let me down and its old now….. and worth around 1K which is shocking if you knew what I'm in company with friend wise with there cars.

Well on the 600 miles
9.52 gallons for this journey in the Cooper D £ 53
13.64 gallons for this journey in the Cooper. £ 67
Don’t know but up here its 114p a ltr for petrol and 124p for diesel

So going by current prices it would have to be something like over 42p ltr difference in fuel price on the mini’s for the petrol to catch up.

I'm not buying it on MPG alone anyway, just liked it. I was out in brand new Audi's A4's, Honda's, the VW' golf GT and BMW 3 series and they did nothing for me. But then I have this mad picture of the mini in the Trossacks in my head.

The cooper is clearly not a 'fast car' but then again the cooper D is not 'ridiculously slow' I've driven one and it was a great fun car to drive. Looking up the book figure on parkers the 0-60 for the cooper is 8.8 the D 9.6 and the one 10.6

I hadn't realised the road tax was £20 on the D, but had heard of a recent magazine test that indicated that the D was far more economical than any hybrid on the market. As I understand it it is also due to become exempt from the London CC (if this affects you.) With the mini's excellent residuals i think it makes a very appealing package.
