Which is better for gaming, I read on a forum that the 9600 is 25 fps less on AoC. which makes no sense at all to me, why would a newer card be worse than the older, anyway if it is true is it a driver issue or hardware?:confused:

A)The game is stilll a bit buggy
B) 9600GT is a midrange card, 8800GT ISN'T.

In reality the 9600GT is a shrunk, slightly cut down 8800GT, hence its a bit slower.

Actually AOC is extremely buggy.

It leaks VRAM terribly, and one of the "dirty" fixes is to bring up the video options, adjust the level of AA, then set it back to the previous setting.

For example:

Your AA is set to none:

Go to video options
Turn None to 2
Apply and wait for reload
Set back to none
Apply and wait for it to reload

It actually can increase the frame rate massively.

I have also been getting rather weird "black screens" that appear in the game after it loads (as I am running about) it only happens rarely, but going to desktop and then going back to the game fixes it. A few other people have had the issues too :(

And yeah, 9600 is a little slower than the 8800 GT :(

That is odd that the 8800GT is faster than 9600GT, a lot of comon sense in the developers head of the 9600, so all Geforce 9x cards are slower then the Geforce 8x cards.

This is nothing new - the 7800GT is faster than the 8600GT under most circumstances as it has a 256bit bus as opposed to 128bit.

The first number is just a new generation, it doesn't mean it'll be faster, a new mid range card will NEVER BE faster than the previous gen high end card.

It's usually the second number that denotes its actual performance. 9600GT takes over from 8600GT and is not meant to beat the 8800 series in any way.

8800GT.

even in SLI your fps will be better. Though it must be said, the 9600GT scales extremely well in SLI

... because of the updated 9 series drivers, just thought I'd add that on ;) however, I think that if you use 8800GT's in SLi with the 175+ nvidia drivers, you'll see the same performance as I'm sure nvidia have now updated SLI performance for 8 series cards? Can't remember where I seen it though

Cheers Pug

Very true.

Although I'm sure there'll be a scenario where a new gen's midrange beats a previous gen's low high end (if you follow the logic - 8800GT).

It's happened in the past, it all depends a bit on how powerful the new tech is. For example the gf4ti4200 is faster than all the gf3 series, just as the gf3ti200 is better than all the gf2 series.

Definately the 8800 GT, the 9600 GT only has 64 streams compared to the 8800 GT's 112, and its the replacement for the 8600.
