inlet manifold design.. why the change?

I have a few manifolds kicking about, one is similar to what is fitted my car. That is the metal manifold.

This one;

The runners branch off the plenum and travel straight forward, to the ports.

Why on this manifold (which could quite easily fit my car too) do they go backwards, loop round and then into the ports. Is it just to increase the length of them. What effect does this have?

The r32 as standard has a very long set of intake runners, which gives it a lot of low to mid range torque.

The people doing the turbo kits are now looking at using both a short runner and long runner intake manifold depending what the customer wants...

aye, i've seen varibale intake geometery used on cars before. iirc the alfa 2.0 ts uses it.
 
on the stock r32, there is a vacuum controlled valve at the intake port side of the manifold, that at a certain airflow (around 4k on a stock r32) opens up 2 extra runners to let more air in.
 
my mondeo uses variable length intake runners you have a long and short runner going to each cylinder but the short ones have a buttery fly valve in them so they are only used above 3.5k RPM
 
^ as above, my Prelude has the same. 1 set of runners are open all the time, the others open at ~3.5-4k. That's in addition to VTEC engaging at 5200rpm ;)
