Hi,

i am looking for some new headphone for gaming, music, and dvds and i am also thinking of getting a JVC/Victor SU-DH1 as well to go with them but i am unsure which headphones to get out of the HD595 or the HD600.

i did have some 595's on order today but i have found some 600's for £140 which seem a good price and to be honest i would rather pay £55 more if the 600's are worth it.

i know that the 600's should be used with an amp but will i still need one if i use them with the SU-DH1 ?

also if i was to go for an amp with the 600's what would be a good choice for a budget price of around £70.

The 595s sound good but I thought the build quality was poor for the price.

The AKG K701s rocked them in that respect and sounded great. Have you considered them? Not sure what the going rate is these days.

don't look to bad, a little bit more than i was looking at spending but you only live once.

i take these will be ok with out an amp as they are only 62 Ohms ?

I have 595's and 650's, and in reality you need to amp the 650's but not necessarily the 595's (50-ohm imp, so fairly easy to drive, although they can be a bit lacking sans amp).

As for whether the 600's are worth the extra £55, I suppose it depends on the application. But for games/movies and without a decent amp (and soundcard etc) the 595's are much more than ample, plus they seem to sound a lot better while listening to surround sound type stuff (position of the drivers I would imagine). I've only spent a few hours listening to 600's, but I prefer the 595's, they're a lot brighter (but then it's personal choice, so ultimately I spose I suggest you go listen to a pair of each).

As for an amp, hmm, Rega Ear maybe, or a Pro-Ject Headbox I/II, might be a little over budget, but I've not had much experience in amps at this price range.

having spent a long time reading posts i have gone with the HD600's because i read that most users say that the 600's sound just as good if not better than the 595's even when un-amped and as they were only £55 more i thought it was spending the more.

i will have a look at amps tomorrow :D

The HD600's are up there in the top 5 headphones every made. They are superb. I have owned a pair for 10 years+. Sennheiser sell spares as well. I have had to replace the cable a cable of times for instance. They need a hot output so they sound low in volume on say an iPod. A PC sound card is fine though. I use mine through a valve head phone amp, a music fidelity x can. The only disadvantage is that they leak lots of sound . Leave them on and you can almost here them from another room. But for 55 quid more, its a no brainer IMO. They will last for years!

Head-fi.org should be on your reading list. What a forum !

I say go the the 600, very good phone even when unamped !

Good choice on the 600's, far better than the 595's and they don't need to be amped any more than they do - but using decent headphones sans amp is pointless.

The SU-DH1 looks crap. There's plenty of software that can output using Dolby HEadphone or similar so no need for a cheapy outboard DAC.Dolby headphone box.

i have got a ibasso P2 amp to go with the HD600 which gets a lot of good prase from head-fi

also i have heard a lot of good things about the SU-DH1 and as i want to use it on the PS3 and not the PC then software is not going to help :D

still i will soon find out
