I don't think Gilette and Hicks even considered firing Rafa after seeing the fans protests.

Fergie had ample time to do something prior to his cup success.

Like Ripper said, they were trying to get rid of him even when the protests were going on. It was during that time they approached Klinsmann.

After everything had cooled down (well almost) they said that it was true they'd contacted him.

I think the whole malarky with Sven and Grant this year has proven that owners want almost instant success with new managers.

Sven guides City to the best result in the Premiership, the majority of fans thought he had done a brilliant job and wanted him to stay, he made some really good signings that jelled instantly at the start of the season. He gets the boot.

Grant, now this is tricky whether his success (or lack of, if you will) was down to Chelsea's strength or his own skills is something you'll have to make your own mind up. But coming in after one of the most popular managers at the club ever leaves, and brings the team right back up the table after a dismal start. Guides the team to a League Cup final, Champions League final and 2nd in the Premiership. He gets the boot.

Owners want instant success, very few in the Premiership (or probably the world) have the patience to let a manager build a squad and shape it to their vision - 1 season isn't long enough to do that, heck without instant unlimited resources you're left with the players that the previous guy brought in, not all of which would be any good. It'll take a season or two to build a squad that suits the managers needs.

On the Chelsea side of things....

Are they simply aiming too high with the quality of manager that they want to attract to the club?

Do managers outside of the Premiership see Chelsea as a top club when they're already at the likes of AC Milan, Juventus or have been a manager at Inter or Barcalona. Or are managing at an international level?

Do Chelsea want to wait until Portugal/Russia get knocked out of the Euro's, I mean come on.... neither is going to leave mid tournament.

I think Johnny touched on it slightly, but are most top managers prepared to be just the face of Chelsea. As if the papers are to be believed Abramovich is the guy thats really in charge and the man that will ultimately bring players in and out.

I mean that is supposedly the reason why Jose left in the first place, he was just the face, and just trained the players and flapped his arms on match day (something Grant did very well...)

Mourinho left because he did not want to be 'just a face.

IMO: The first seasons JM was in control with Abramovich apparently not tying JM's hands.

Remember the first two seasons under JM, with Robben and Duff on the wings. Chelsea played a rather attractive football and dominated the league. Lampard as AM, Makelele as DM, with the uber quick wingers.

Abramovich suffered from hubris and became too involved for JM's liking. Cue the Scheva affair, which JM did not approve of. That was the trigger imo.

Rijkard will get the job. It has been very quiet around him and links with Chelsea.

Yeah I agree, If mourinho have had had total control over transfers it's pretty certain Shevchenko, Cole and Ballack would not have been at the club. Ballack has done ok but isn't a player Chelsea really needed, Sheva has been awful mostly (which is a genuine shame) and Chelsea have missed Gallas whilst Cole has been distinctly average. Abramovich's interference messed up what could have been a great team for many years and now Chelsea are in a bit of a mess which could get worse quickly, Lampard and Drogba could decide to ask for transfers, and the list of potential top coaches is pretty small if non existent atm.
