Understanding alcohol %

Pint = over 500mL

Glass of wine = closer to 75~125mL

Pour a pint of wine down your throat you'll get the same effect ;)

Bubbles to make the alcohol get to your bloodstream quicker IIRC - hence why Champagne tends to have more of an effect than wine.

hes not making it up & you're along the right lines there AFAIK - tis something to do with gunpowder! - though it is 'degrees' proof not '%' proof

Got it!

Another factor that facilitates the absorption of alcohol from the small intestine is whether the beverage mixer consumed with the alcohol, or the alcohol itself, is carbonated or not. Carbonated beverages are absorbed more readily than noncarbonated beverages. The rapid intoxication produced by champagne, in contrast to a noncarbonated wine with an equivalent alcohol concentration, is due to the fact that champagne is carbonated.

You're how old and you don't understand percentages?

I hope that wasn't directed at me.

i don't understand how alcohol % is measured.

for example, a can of carling has 4.1% in it. is that the WHOLE can or just a certain dose? if a vodka bottle claims to have 40% and you take a shot, does the shot have 40% in it or just the bottle as a whole?

All the alchohol is in the bottom of the bottle. This is why you get drunker the more bottles you finish.

If you were to get 5 bottles of vodka and only drink the top half of each you won't get drunk.

This reminds me of an old school friend who was boasting he created an 80% cocktail. I thought he had just got hold of a polish bottle of vodka or something and blagged it was his, but no.. his cocktail consisted of JD, Kahlua and something else, and he added the %'s together.

You wouldn't believe how many people believe that adding drinks together increases the alcoholic 'strength'.

i've got some rum that'd make anything 80%, but you do go blind afterwards... or at least wish you were dead.

its really nasty stuff.

Spirits sometimes have the measurement in proof. This is a measurement relating to how flammable the liquid is and the scale is up to 200% being absolute ethanol (pure alcohol).

When you mix ethanol and water you will not get the same total volume of liquid eg 10mL of water + 10mL of ethanol will not give you 20mL of mixture.

This is why measurements have to be made and explained exactly as to when and how it was measured.

errrr....
It's to do with the size of the 'chemical things' (can't remember the right name, compounds maybe)

But it's like if you have a cup of peas and a cup of flour, the flour will fill up the gaps between the peas and give you a total volume of less than the original 2 cups.
