Check out this clip from Question Time, Robert Mugabe was knighted by the UK in 1994 it seems!

The current and former foreign secretarys on the debating panel didn't know until it was brought up on the show!

If there was ever a compelling reason for invading a country, Zimbabwe and its situation is it. But we'll only ever get a strongly-worded comment from the UN and that's it.

Knighted for what exactly? :/ The wiki article doesn't say.

Did he essentially take control of ZANU, form a militia then gain power through force? I just find it incredibly strange a man can gain control of a country through these means. Has he ever commanded the respect of the Zimbabwe citizens?

Money is power, he had financiers.

Don't get why we don't invade. Can't see the British public being against it, all we would get is a bunch of African leaders moaning a bit, but what are they going to do? And I would assume we would get the support of the people over there for doing it..?

Mugabe is nowt but a racist thug who couldn't run a Country if he had the laminated instructions in front of him!

Sorry, but in his case a state sanctioned assassination would work just fine!

rubbish! Mugabe was perfectly capable of running the country for quite some time. Then he went bonkers and RUINED EVERYTHING!

No idea.

Did he essentially take control of ZANU, form a militia then gain power through force?

That's about the size of it, yes.

I just find it incredibly strange a man can gain control of a country through these means.

It's not strange if you understand the political dynamics of the country in question. Zimbabwe is a place where the rule of law plays second fiddle to the rule of the gun. It's a dog eat dog world.

Has he ever commanded the respect of the Zimbabwe citizens?

No.

No he wasn't.

During his first year in power (1980), former militia groups within the Zimbabwean army were freely conducting their own private vendettas against other militia groups and slaughtering any civilians who got in the way. Mugabe did nothing to stop this.

Two years later, Mugabe conducted an ethnic massacre which resulted in the deaths of 20,000 civilians.

Within weeks, the Fifth Brigade had murdered more than two thousand civilians, beaten thousands more, and destroyed hundreds of homesteads.

Most of the dead were shot in public executions, often after being forced to dig their own graves in front of family and fellow villagers. The largest number of dead in a single killing involved the deliberate shooting of 62 young men and women on the banks of the Cewale River, Lupane, on 5 March 1983. Seven survived with gunshot wounds, the other 55 died.

Another way 5 Brigade killed large groups of people was to burn them alive in huts. They did this in Tsholotsho and also in Lupane. They would routinely round up dozens, or even hundreds, of civilians and march them at gun point to a central place, like a school or bore-hole. There they would be forced to sing Shona songs praising ZANU, at the same time being beaten with sticks. These gatherings usually ended with public executions. Those killed could be ex-ZIPRAs, ZAPU officials, or anybody chosen at random.

When Prime Minister Robert Mugabe was directly asked the question if he knew what was going on in Matebeleland by British Investigative Journalist, Jeremy Paxman of 'Panorama' Programme fame. He vehemently denied it, and called it antique western sabotage tactics.

Source.

Zimbabwe is currently in the last stages of a democratic election. To enter now would only lend fuel to Mugabe's claim that the West is trying to force regime change by illegitimate methods.

The UN has to wait until the election is over before it can put troops on the ground. And in order for that to even be an option, it has to be passed by a UN vote.

Personally, I believe that the ANC member states would attempt to block any such motion.

Agreed - either an invasion or a convenient assassination ...

Frankly, seeing this obnoxious, loathsome specimen strutting around being feted by the sycophants at the UN whilst his people starve is a crime against humanity - I can only assume that Zimbabwe has no significant natural oil reserves or else, in our self-appointed role as world policemen, the US and UK would have invaded by now. It seems we like changing brutal regimes that happen to have oil reserves, but if your regime doesn't, then we'll just say "Tut, tut ... that's jolly naughty, old chap" and wring our hands.

I know what you're saying is correct, but the election in Zimbabwe is democratic only in name - since when did a democratic election feature the arrest, intimidation, torture or murder of the opposition or the electorate that dares vote for them?
