ive always thought this was a no no. But ive been told all cold water comes from the mains and the tank upstairs is just for hotwater? true?

Yeah, it's great........now water from the toilet, that's really rank unless you flush it first!!

If the cold tap in the bathroom is sourced from a tank in your roofspace then do not drink it. A rat could have died in the tank or some other such disgusting happening.

Depends where you are...

Up North its lovely, down south its generally crap :p

views maybe biased :P

Because some cold water taps, especially older houses are fed from a cold water tanks in the loft. And they're full of dead things. If its fed from the mains then fair enough. Still if you clean your teeth with it, I can't see as it would make much difference.

Tastes the same as any water...
Why would water upstairs taste different from the one downstairs, it's the same water ?

Hot and cold taste the same too afaik here, but then we have city warming so I don't think I should drink the hot water, but I do it nonetheless too lazy to switch to cold water...

Water storage tank with dead birds n stuff, what water tank  ?

Its perfectly acceptable, I normally have a few gulps after brushing teeth.

Cold tap is from mains, its the hot tap that is sometimes fed from a tank if you have one of those old style heating systems.

My house was built in 1992 and it had a cold water tank until I did away with it.

Hmm, I don't actually know whether we have one tbh, we got a new water system fitted about 5 years ago though but I'm no expert so will get someone else to take a look incase there is a rat!
