RC Trucks and Cars

I've got a HPi Savage SS 4.6. It's really good fun if you don't get hassled all the time from kids or junkies wanting to know

- Whats it's top speed?
- How fast does it go?
- How many gears has it got?
- How much was it?
add infinitum.

You ideally need some jumps to keep the interest going, skateboard ramps are ideal but awkward to store.

Mr White, that's a nice truck you have there, it looks so much better than the advert I saw for it. Is it easy to get parts for it ? and how long does a tank of

About 8 minutes on 150cc of fuel, 5 or less if you try, it's a big engine.

You can get all the parts you need in the UK if you shop online.

Some LFS tend to favour one or two brands though, usually HPI and Traxxas, but you can get parts online next day for less money, so what your LFS stocks doens't really factor into making a decision anymore.

If you want nitro, the MGT 8.0 is great fun, it has the biggest nitro engine out of any of the trucks (8cc/0.50ci), it's just excess at it's finest :p

With regards to electric, you don't have the hassle of starting, break in, tuning, re-tuning, the noise (depending on your view on it), less maintenance.

With nitro you get the great noise (again, depending on your view), an electric motor will never match the event of a combustion engine :p

And you generally get better performance out of the box.

There is no match between something like an E-Maxx and an MGT 8.0 when you're talking stock, convert the E-Maxx to brushless and it's a different story.

I can't stand electrics personally, they're just too clincal, you're just watching it buzz around with an electric whine, where's the smoke, the smell, and the big noise? :D

Then with regards to price, with electric you'll want two or three batteries (£60-£100), more if you can run LiPos, and a good charger (£30-£50)

With nitro you're looking at £15-20 for a gallon of fuel, that'd last me just over four hours, you're looking at a good amount more than that if you get a smaller engine.

JAMAL omg, that thing is massive !! looks awesome though but I really would struggle just storing it so that's not an option for me, but wow nice one. How much was it btw ?

With 2.4ghz radio gear £700:o

Well I just got back from the RC Races. No trucks there tonight only Touring Car, the club only does offroad it seems once a month or something. The touring cars were great and I was surprised by how much of s bashing they took, almost tempted to pick one of them up with the Monster truck so I can join the club and have some proper races each week. It was a mix of electric and nitro cars, the nitros looks and sounded the best but the electrics were putting in the good lap times.. damn this is going to get expensive :)

Mr White : it's only just regstered with my how clean your truck is, it's like new. How do you keep it so clean ?

Jase

Is that fuel injected, or is that purple box just a data-logger of some kind?

Also: It's too clean.

Looks like a failsafe unit to me. Hah, you're right though, that is clean. One of the worst things with nitro cars is the oil from the exhaust can get everywhere, makes everything greasy and dirt sticks to it.

I actually made an extended exhaust for my Savage, routed right round to the back because I was sick of all the oil getting over the wheel, suspension and body.

Mr_White, does the suspension on your MGT have oil reserviours at the top?

what are the top buggies at the moment, is it still losi xxx and RC10?

Seen you can get a XXX-CR for £110 from america - that a good deal?

Don't buy associated they cost too much, buy a thundertiger MTA4 its the same truck different name but costs less and if you want the AE MGT look just get an MGT shell. I have an MTA4 S28 and S50. Fast trucks the only real downfall is maybe weak shocks and knuckle ends but you can replace the stock ones with alloy ones over time (stock are plastic. As for the Jato i got my son one for his 7th birthday, get new wheels bigger and better tyres and you will have a lot more fun.

There is £10 between the Associated and Thunder Tiger, and the Associated comes with a XP3D FM computerised digital radio transmitter, the Thunder Tiger comes with a much cheaper transmitter lacking all the handy features, so it's well worth the extra £10.

Everyone says they're indentical, which they are, but people fail to mention the fact the transmitters are different, mainly because not many people know, they just assume they're the same since the trucks are the same.

The shocks on the MGT 8.0 are completely fine, I don't think I've seen anyone manage to break them who didn't smack a tree/post/wall at high, it doesn't matter what parts or truck you've got then, it's going to break, same with the knuckle ends, the only time I'd mod those is if you want a greater turning ability

Replacing parts with alloy is a big no no as well, since they tend to warp, transfer the energy onto a more expensive and harder to get to part, and break it.

Then you've got a warped alloy part, and another broken plastic part.

Unless you can afford to replace everything with alloy, don't mind the performance losses from the increased weight, and can afford to replace an expensive part when it warps in a crash, then they're a possibility, if not, they're a pointless inconvenience for the sake of a bit of bling.

I'd rather stick to RPM parts, or just stick with stock plastic parts and replace them cheaply if they break.

RPM parts are the best to get if you want to upgrade, they have none of the down falls of alloy parts, RPM parts are flexible under extreme stresses, so they absorb the energy, don't break, and don't pass the energy onto a weaker part and break it, and they'll replace them for free if you manage to break them, however, the only thing I'd replace on the MGT are the a-arms all around, these are a weak point on every truck and will break eventually if you're bashing, once you buy RPM a-arms, you don't have to worry about them.

@ Biggles, that box is a temperature monitor, it logs high and low temps and displays in real time, with a loop with several sensors on it going around the bottom of the engine cooling head, the fail safe is in the radio box.

I just bought this months RC RACER magazine, the Associated MGT 8.0 was reviwed in it and what a review. The summary at the end said "The MGT 8.0 is the new king! it is the most insane monster truck we have driven. Even if you squeeze the throttle gently the front end rises. This truck is dare we say it, the best truck to date! American muscle power is back on top!".

With that sort of review I'm soo tempted to dump the electric truck idea and get it. I have to read up a little more but very tempted with it now. Going to have a look on youtube now to see if there are any in action.

So that leave the Touring Car, there is a very nice looking one reviewed called the "Schumacher Fusion 28 RTR". Again its a nitro but looks awesome. I'm trying to find some info on a Tamiya TR416 but having problems finding it.

The MGT 8.0 has a wheelie bar, but you'll flip it if you just mash the throttle, even when you're just driving along at low throttle, not just at launch, it's brilliant :D

Well weather permitting I'll be out with my Jato tomorrow, need to stop blasting it in straight lines and practice my driving skill a bit more. Here's a pic of my Jato :

I have a Midnight Pumpkin got it in 1990 was awesome driving it over the garden and soil it would take anything, the motor went in the end and the axle broke, still have it in the loft might get round to fixing it.

It still amazes me how much power the latest generation nitro engines have got. Especially the small block traxxas engines, they've really come on in leaps and bounds.

The field behind my house was mown for silage on Friday, nice and short. :D

Only trouble is I'm in the middle of fitting a new garage door... argh, can't do both
