Hello folks,

Just looking for people's ideas, or past experiences on how to go about buying a car in England given that I live in Northern Ireland.

What do i need to do different?

How would i go about transferring money etc.?

I probably will only be over there for one day so that rules out waiting for cheques to clear and what not.

BACS Transfer and cheque 3 to 4 days, CHAPS transfer same day.

Cash is freely accepted.

Bankers draft is as good as cash provided of course it's not pretend.

not heard of cash over in NI?

Getting £20,000 through security in airports over here is not going to be easy to explain away!

Electronic transfers seem to be the bet way to go, just needed some advice on the best way to approach it.

If you have a Laptop and a 3G/Orange/Vodafone/O2/Whatever card, you can do it online there and then infront of the guy selling the car so he's a witness too.

Only slight snag with that is, with most online bank services, you have have until later that day to reverse the transaction. Could be difficult to convince the seller even if you do the transfer infront of them that you're not just going to drive off and cancel it.

Ah right, yes i can do that with my Halifax online account, i've used it to transfer money with friends and family.

I'm sure any phone conversations with the potential seller will identify if they are willing to do so, plus its free.

That surely must be the same with any electronic transfer?

How would they know?? you going to tell them?

Well im not going to put it in a bag that goes in the planes hold. So when they check my hand baggage on the xray, they'll be sure to ask questions about the big wad of cash. Just easier without the hassle.

Informing a local bank a couple of days beforehand could be the best way to go i think, so they can have the cash ready.

I was just about to suggest that, call a branch local to where the car is located a few days before, so they can have the cash ready for you. They might need to see a proof of identification if it's over a certain amount :)

I don't think carrying thousands of pounds in cash is the best idea anyway, should the worst happen you're up the creek.
