Well it was along weekend (since Thursday), and its not quite there yet, but the replacement engine is now in, and it runs.

The timing is slightly out, and it needs brake/clutch and PAS refilling, but it runs, and there is nothing out of the ordinary bar the ever so slightly out timing.

It'll be going into the local specialist in the next few days for a check and for the timing belt to be adjusted and replaced.

Full rebuild log (with pics) to follow as and when I've written it up, but I'm so glad that it runs :)

Obligatory "there is someone under my car" shot (containing DRZ and my mate Derek):

Glad I could be what help I was. I think in that photo I was getting cross with your PAS pump bolts or something :p

Did you manage to get a rocker cover gasket in the end?

Well done, can't wait to see it all healthy again :) must be a nice feeling to have it all work again, going to start up my Rover again for the first time in 6 months next week when we finally finish the gearbox change. Fingers crossed it works haha, got jump leads at the ready.

You let durz loose on your engine bay??

Nope, stuck with the rocker cover that was on the donor engine for now, will swap them when the engine is actually running properly.

Oh god yeah, such a releif that it actually runs!

Did it die from the same problems that Passat and A4 1.8T's suffer from, sludge and oil pickup problems causing the top end to seize?

I'm looking at getting a Passat 1.8T and i'm worried about the sludge issue, dropping the pan to replace the oil pump/clean pickup is a right pita on the Passat.

I know your engine is tranverse so "shouldn't" suffer from the above problem.

Ever thought about fitting a oil pressure gauge to the new engine to keep an eye on it?
