Just wondering if they are going to release a 9800 GTS? It's just that I've been offered a half decent price for my BFG 8800 GTS OC2 640 MB and "was" thinking of buying an 8800 GTS 512, as the difference to pay would be minimal. But I now see that OCuk appear to be running down their stocks of 8800 GTS's and was wondering if this was signalling something. I suppose they could just be clearing the decks ready for the next gen cards.

Could wait for the next gen cards, but their bound to be a fair price premium when they first come out. This just seemed like a cheap way to gain a bit more performance.

Decisions, decisions..

There's gonna be a 9800 GT, however that's just a rebranded 8800 GT.

Note that the 8800 GTS 512MB, 8800 GT and 9800 GTX all share the same processing core, and all perform very closely to one-another. If there were a 9800 GTS it'd probably quite literally be exactly the same as the 8800 GTS 512MB. However, in June there's supposed to be the GeForce GTX260 (260 is GTS as 280 is GTX) which will most probably outperform most 8 and 9 series cards (bar the 9800 GX2 with all likelyhood), but it'll cost.

Thanks for that. As you say, the 9800 series cards seem to be a little bit on the cynical side marketing wise. Might just keep what I've got and do a complete re-build later in the year. By then the current Intel CPU's will have come down in price and hopefully the next gen cards will have dropped a bit.

weres Loadsa when you need him:D

At the annual "throw rotten tomato's at your most hated video card manufacturer" event. Last year he had a trolley full for ATI after R600 but after Nvidia's act of late he has brought two trolley loads to this event :D. It's going to be messy.

They wont do a 9800GTS. I mean they cant.

If a 9800 GTX > 8800GTS by a minimum (and is the exact same card).

Then a GTS version would have to be SLOWER than the GTX, and there is only a 25Mhz core clock between the two cards above, 9800 GTS would need to be quicker than the 8800GTS, but slower than the 9800GTX, would need to go with a 666Mhz core clock by the looks of it!

I dont see them doing it.

Seems like an 8800GTX/9800GTX are too close to even have an 8800GTX as a 9800GTX, it wold have to be a 9800GTX lite or something.

man whats the point in that...

release new cards with the exact same core

seriously concidering going to ATI for the next upgrade i do.

I suppose I could consider a 9800 GTX. I've seen a couple at half decent prices. Though this then makes me wonder if my Tagan 530w (30a 12v) would be up to it, as I see it requires two 6-pin power connectors (which the Tagan does have I suppose).

Emmmm. So many things to think about.

More than up to the job got a X2 on a Enermax 550 watt with a over clock and np.And it was reported just before the 9800 GTX release that the next card up was a refresh of the GTS a 9800GTS guess they binned that idea and went for the GT.

The 4850 and 4870 are going to be very interesting cards for someone with this sort of budget. I'd hold fire till you can find out what they can do.

I think you could be right. I've jumped quick and bought card/s before just before new stuff coming out and been disappointed.
