Charcoal. We still have a pile of kebabs and chicken left over from yesterday - the BBQ was going strong so I piled on as much meat as I could find (next doors cat had a lucky escape).

Also gave Barbequed Bananas a go for the first time yesterday, and they were rampant.

All been done before, but the taste and flavour is the same it's just ignorance to think other wise. Charcoal adds nothing.

As I said before the 2 time world BBQ champion uses gas, when I went to the Rib championships in Nevada they used gas. These people know considerably more than a few people on an internet forum drunkenly burning burgers 5 or 6 times a year. There isn't a flavour you can add using charcoal that cannot be done using a gas bbq.

Granted it takes a lot more effort to evenly cook on real flame but the flavour isn't any different.

Thank you.

You're all a bunch of wimps. Get in a forest and build a real fire :D

Then drag the missus into the cave afterwards.

Seriously I think the proper BBQ is the closest we get to the feeling of being cavemen agian.

Always used to be Charcoal but now it's Gas, far quicker to get going and you can still sprinke herbs/spices on the lava brickettes to add some extra flavour - personal favourite of mine is Rosemary.

They're both great for BBQing tbh, but I'd use charcoal and for things like ribs I'd add some cherry wood or something to get the smokey flavour.

Charcoal FOR THE WIN!!! Gas people just don't know how to handle a proper BBQ!

I've got both, use both. The gas one gets used about 3 times a week all year round if it's not raining. Coal one, about 3-4 times a year.

You enjoy your oven cooked meals, I'll be out on the BBQ :)

Good call mate, I've got a massive rosemary bush right next to my bbq :)
Use the twigs as skewers for kebabs

Combination of above...gas bbq with charcoal briquettes...let me explain

I bought a gas bbq recently after using coal for years, and we cook indian style (im british/pakistani), now for chicken we found gas was fine, but cooking seekh kebabs..nothing but coals would do...gas just doesnt have the right amount of heat available.
I think it realy depends on what you are gonna be using the bbq for, to determine whats best, gas/coal.

Charcoal takes too long to get them to turn red hot, and you can only cook stuff when they are red hot, thats when charcoal is at its best, none of this flame rubbish. Although i will use gas, just because its quicker.

Yup when flames go out build a pyramid out of the charcoal, as soon as most/all of it has turn white/grey and there's a red glow in the centre it's ready to cook :)

Going to have to get a new BBQ very soon though, the old one had become unusable as the area around the burner had rusted to hell and back, gets left in a poor state most of the year round, hardly ever gets a proper clean either.

New one will have the due care and attention given to it :)

Must check-up on the Rosemary bush down the end of the garden - it has a habbit of falling over ¬_¬

It's not categoric fact that charcoal/gas taste the same in fact it doesn't taste the same - it's just people with under developed palates that cannot appreciate the difference.

Charcoal does need a bit of extra effort if you're not too hot with how to get the best out of it, but ultimately cooks stuff in a more flavoursome way. This is entirely subjective of course but I just don't see the point in gas bbqs other than they are slightly quicker and you can control the flame - but charcoal just requires a bit more attention, and interaction and knoweledge of how to use it. Any idiot can use gas, using charcoal requires skill.

^^ i can use charcoal a lot easier than i can gas. Everything i've ever cooked on a gas bbq has always come out black on the outside and 'warm' on the inside. Still tastes good though :p
