Right, I am after a new tv.

I need a 42" tv, but i am not sure whether to get a LCD or Plasma?

It will be used for:
  • Sky
  • Xbox

And Also, The XBOX will be connected Via VGA.

Which should i get ,and also any that you reccomend for £550(could stretch to 600)

I have seen a 42" Plasma for £550(samsung)

Plasma is the right idea, but please, not the Samsung.

Save a little more and get the TH42PX80 from Panasonic or the 42PG6000 from LG is supposed to be very good. Both can be had for around £650.

I only have experience of the Panny, but they are supposed to be comparable sets. I dounb't you will be disappointed with either and they should hold their own for a good few years.

I'd read the rest of that thread if I were you, as I and a number of other argue that Plasma is the better technology and will continute to be produced.

Woooops, just have!

Oh Well, need to find one with a VGA input, which is proving to be rather hard

Actually, I've jsut read that there are two different types of DVI, one digial one one analogue and VGA will only convert to the analogue.

If I were you I'd join avforums and search the site there as there appears to be some pretty useful info for you. I'd love to go through it myself, but I'm at work.

LCD stil lags behind plasma in the picture quality sakes and is the inferior technology !

Philips tvs are a bit meh, samsung are meh and panasonics are excellent.

That is all :D

plasma production is being cut (fabs shutting)

lcd production is still climbing

maybe plasma is superior from a image quality perspective, but from a pure technical aspect it's based on technology from the stone age and difficult to fab......

Plasma is too expensive for mainstream so LCD is here to stay and tide us over till (im guessing here), OLED, which takes the benefits from both techs and merges them. (self lighting pixels giving great contrast of plasma and super thin, low power gas free displays of LCD)

Absolutely correct.

LCD is cheaper and the margins on it are better for the manufacturers and retailers, which is why they push it at us all the time.

Plasma provides a better picture.

As I have to tell people at work every day, new does not always equal better.

Personally, I'd be happy to pay £50 to £100 extra for a large panel TV that is actually good than to save a little money on something cheap to 'tide me over' until OLED.

Why not the Samsung? Have you read the reviews? Scores higher than the mentioned Panasonic models.

You can tell that without a model number? Interesting.

Go read one of the many complaint threads on AV forums. There are just too many issues. Also, regardless of what the reviews say, the picture quality is just not as good as the Panasonics.

I know which model numbers as you seem to tell people to avoid them in threads like this, the PSQ97 range. Here is just one review of said screen http://www.hdtvorg.co.uk/reviews/plasma/samsung_ps50q97hdx.htm there are plenty more reviews like the above which get very good reviews, I’ve got the one mentioned and its excellent, defiantly a plasma to recommend rather than avoid.

Every TV isnt perfect.
