Is my xbox supposed to be THIS noisy?

Seriously, this is ridiculous. Have GTA on pause and the sound of my Xbox is just deafening - it is completely drowning out the sound of my PC with what, nearly 10 fans in it.

It's very annoying. Is it supposed to be this noisy? It's just the disc drive - it's virtually silent without a disc in the drive.

Damnit!

Nope - it's a recent one. 11/07.

Like I said the actual fan is silent - this is the drive that makes the ridiculous noise :(

I have one of the new falcon models with a manufacture date of april 08 and a benq dvd drive its loud. I thought the new ones where meant to be quiter but mine is not its just as loud as my launch one. It does get annoying sometimes especially at night when trying to play quite..

The drive noise does vary a lot even with identical models. That's the problem with cheap components.

Newer ones were never meant to be quieter.

One thing i have noticed with my Benq one is it loads a lot quicker than my launch one did its noticeable most on halo 3.

How can you tell what drive you have?

I read somewhere that two squash balls cut in half and placed below the 360 reduces noise by stopping the vibrations, not sure of it would work but its worth a go.

Majority of noise is from the drive spinning up and accessing, not too much would be solved with sound dampening materials.

Doesn't work. Neither does dynamatting the case and DVD drive. Nor did changing the fans. Its just a poo design and the engineer responsible should be shot first. Then the product testers should be shot. Then whoever authorised the launch with it sounding like that.

My 2nd 360 has just died, giving the unreadable disc error, and both were just out of warranty, costing me a packet this lol.

Just ordered a new Pro pack, Will it be 3rd lucky in terms of reliablity?

New model i'm told will be a falcon motherboard with a Benq drive, are they as prone to, whats the term, 'knacking up'?

I'm half tempted to open my xbox, take out the drive and extend the power/data cables and stick just the drive in the back room. Might be a walk to have to change it but at least I won't hear it so much!
