hi guys

my mate claims to have gone through a set of F1's in 6000 miles of average driving and says the grip is rubbish

he's now got vredestein ultracs and claims they're much better

i've driven tom|nbk's focus with F1s and it was awesome and i was gonna order a set for my mondy but my mate has strongly advised against this, what do you guys think??

What is "general driving" for your mate?

I'm guessing it's not the same as you or I doing "general" driving :p

I can fully understand his frustration at the longevity of the tyres, I myself found them to last an absolutely **** poor amount of time/milage, and ate through them in way under 6,000 miles.

However the reason they chew themselves so damn quickly is due to the soft compound and high amounts of lateral grip.

So he is either lying about the grip, or lying about the milage.

EDIT: Either way, I found Falken FK452's to offer similar levels of grip, cost 66% of the price of F1's, and seem to be wearing better.

Get him to check on the sidewall of the tyre and see if it says "Made in Germany". Apparently there's two versions of the F1, one of which says "Made in Thaiwan" on them, and these are made with a different compound to the German ones. In fact, t'other ones shouldn't even be sold in the EU.

Indeed, they should be made in Germany, although if he had anything else he would be all over the road.

F1s are a soft tyre so will wear out quickly but should have brilliant grip. Tyres do vary from car to car and it does depend on the geo setup too. What do other Mondy owners use?

My Bridgestone RE040s aren't gonna go much further than 6k :s

Woah, are the FK452's that good? I was just about to get Eagle F1's but now, reading this it has made me think of the Falkens...

I've had a set on the front of my celica 190 for over 16000 miles. They are now down to between 2 and 3mm and need changing, but they've been great. A lot of that has been motorway mileage, but a lot of b road blasts too.

They certainly appear to be to me, they stood up to an absolute caining at donington, offering awesome levels of grip. Also, the tread didn't roll at all, whereas the F1's I used to have would start to roll and peel with similar punishment - not good!

They stop being any good well before 6k too, much like RE010's.

F1's should be fine on a Mondeo. I suspect they'd wear much faster on an LCR, you can't really throw a Mondeo about anyway?

I personally think mine are excellant, he must drive like a loon to think they " don't grip well "

lots of st220 owners are apparently dissapointed with F1's too

Dunno I'm really happy with mine I dont have much to compare to except the pilot sports that were previously on the front but these have better grip and so far in my 3k miles have worn really fairly well losing about 1.5mm of grip in that time.
