Which should i get? Massive decision.

Food for thought.

I have talked to my dad about it and he said they can fund it(bank account :D) aslong as it will last.

I have around £1,400 now but , ideally, this is for a tv. So i would need to save more i think. Not sure yet.

The base spec iMac isnt worth getting untill you customize it, id get the iMac 24", the 3ghz will be plenty.

RAM is about £60 now.

There's no way you'd need the power of the MacPro. Most people I know who were studying Graphic Design were using MacBooks, iBooks and PowerBooks. Only person I know with a MacPro is my housemate, and she doesn't use it to its capabilities at all. She might as well have a Mac Mini.

Coming from someone who has just completed a Graphic Design degree a top spec iMac will be more than enough for the Adobe Creative Suite and your other needs. It's only when you start getting into heavy 3D work like Cinema 4D or you are pushing Premiere and After Effects past normal usage that you might need to think about the Mac Pro.

The reason why people say "if you're going into GD use a Mac" is that it's pretty much industry standard. It will help you no end if you're familiar with the OS, keyboard shortcuts etc etc. Also (and it might be a bit shallow) it's easier to take a designer seriously if they have some sense of style/good product design rather than working on 'just another beige box'.

Really don't know what to do.

I just keep thinking that MacPro is a better option as it is a investment. For an extra £400 or so( if i got top 24" iMac) I could have a much better machine + Monitor, which is upgradeable if need be.

I would get the 1x 2.8ghz processor, and upgrade it if need be in future. With the iMac i can just see me going through all this when i need to be saving for uni, you understand?

Really don't know what to do.

In your first post you say you hate upgrading computers then say you want to get a Mac Pro and dive into its bowels to upgrade the CPU.

I have recommended what is best, in my not so humble opinion, is to get a 24" iMac. Do it via refurb to save more or at the least by HE discount.

The reasons?

Portable. Easy to move to Uni and back.
Space saving. Again, good for university.
Powerful. 2.8 or 3Ghz CPU
Good GPU.

Bang 4GB in there and it will last for years. Even at university you won't run software that will push a Mac Pro.

However, it's your money...

Dont get the Mac Pro, at the price of the Mac Pro you can get a MUCH better PC in all honesty, the iMac is good value, and you wont use all its power at all.

The Mac Pro is good when customized, as stock its fairly overpriced (feel free to flame) but for your use, iMac is much better.

Would A iMac be able to run
Football Manager
Msn
Internet
Music
At the same time fast?

Skeeny I'll have a look at work today to see if we have any 2.4 Quad core mac pros left. We stumbled across a few late 07 Mac pros (new, sealed and boxed) a few months ago and simply could not shift them (running tiger).

We did reduce them to something ridiculous like £1200 though.

I'll pop back on tonight at about 8 or 9pm.

2 Year guarantee on them too.

Even my macbook (2.4ghz, 2gb ram) seems to handle that rather fine, they're not that demanding, and it's what I do nearly every other day. :)

I also use my macbook for Photoshop and Illustrator.

Easy. Especially with 4GB of RAM. OS X is so much better at multi-tasking than Windows. :)

My 2Ghz Core 2 Due, 2GB RAM MacBook can runs Photoshop CS3, Firefox, Adium and iPhoto (or Aperture) at the same time, so I should think a 3Ghz iMac with 4GB of RAM should fly. :)

With 4GB of RAM, Windows would be just as capable of multi-tasking.

Right. I think i will be able to get the VAT knocked off(dads work) if not it will be the 14% HE discount. But well stick to VAT for now.

I have to add £60-£70 for 4gb Ram.
Total = £1,350

Mac Pro

Plus Monitor = £1,450.

So the difference is £100, worth it ?

Your 17, you wont need a Mac Pro, and about the FM, MSN etc.

Im running CS3, FM2008 in Parallels, MSN, Internet, iTunes, Mail, GarageBand, and Aperture on the 2.66ghz iMac model, with 2GB ram, with no slowing down at all.

And the extra £100 is for less things in a way, extra cores, less RAM, less HDD.

Get the iMac.

Ye, but the thing that is now bugging me is the upgrade capabilities.

I just can't stop but think that I might:

run out of HDD
Need a better gfx

If this happens, im in trouble!!
