I'm constantly confused by this.

I thought that Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty was one game out on the PS2. Then Metal Gear Solid 2: Subsistence came out on the Xbox. But I've just read that there was Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, but I thought the third game was Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater? Which was the prequel.

If I'm just being an idiot then sorry, but I really can't understand how this all goes together. :p

If anyone does explain it, then thank you in advance.

#2 was Substance and just an extended version of the original Sons of Liberty wasn't it?

#3 was originally Snake Eater, then I think another extended version came out called Subsistence.

Not a big follower of MGS though, so someone might correct me.

So basically on the PS2 there was MGS2: Sons of Liberty, then MGS2: Substance, as well as MGS3: Snake Eater and MGS3: Subsistence.

MGS2: Substance came to Xbox as well :)

Yup just a Directors Cut really. I don't think there is much difference in the story all too much as I remember one of them you just got a load more VR missions.

And PC if I recall correctly.

And btw is that fact in your signature really true Inazuma? lol

Yeah, it is. It's the norm to have exponentially increasing technical detail from generation to generation. Snake's hair in MGS2 is even more polygons than a soldier in MGS1 for example.

Storyline order is MGS3 -> MGS1 -> MGS2 -> MGS4, I believe.

Just don't ask us to explain the plot next :o. We'll be here all day.

You missed Portable Ops and the original Metal Gears from the MSX.

I think it goes like this (correct me if wrong)

MGS3 (PS2) -> Portable Ops (PSP) -> Metal Gear (MSX) -> Metal Gear 2 (MSX) -> Metal Gear Solid (PS1) -> Metal Gear Solid 2 (PS2) -> Metal Gear Solid 4 (PS3)

Almost as confusing as the story line :p

I'm sure someone posted a link to a video which explained the plot of MGS up to MGS4 - anyone happen to know it? :p

I only played MGS 1+2, and that was enough to thrown me :o

there's a thread on NeoGAF that explains everything you need to know in preparation for 4, it is extremely well done.

I can't be sure if there are any spoilers in the reply's to the OP so tread careful!

The Metal Gears before the Solid series have been retconned and altered in the following games so much that it's not worth trying to play through them. You only really need to play Metal Gear Solid series, as Snake Eater does explain the backstory well enough, as well as the PSP games for explaining how Outer Heaven came to be.

Thanks for the posts guys. :D

So we have (in order of release date, NOT chronological order):

Metal Gear

Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake

Metal Gear Solid

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty

Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

Have I got that correct? :p Thanks for all of the useful information. :)

That looks spot on, just stick Portable Ops in-between Subsistence and MGS4.
