Bioshock - late , but what a game!

An awesome premise, coupled with great atmosphere, a fantastic setting and possibly one of the best storylines of recent times - made it seem like a classic...

Its just a shame it was totally ruined by over simplistic combat, extremely shallow gameplay and repetative enemies.

I think its called "Consolitis". Had this been a PC exclusive, it would have been infinately better. It just dissapoints me how such an amazing story (just read some of the in depth discussion about Ayn Rand, Objectivism and Bioshocks take on her philosophies) can be twinned with the most basic levels of combat and action.

But then, I just think back to how fondly SS2 and Deus Ex did it. Then I remember Deux Ex2...and it suddenly dawns on me. Consoles killed story-heavy games. I mean, who cares about the story? You can beat on someone with a spanner!!!11!!oneone.

I could rant about Bioshock all day. Everytime someone starts yelling about its "Awesome" or "Best Game Ever" status I want to shove a copy of Deus Ex down their throat.

What's the reason for so many basic and boring PC exclusives then? I'll mention Crysis as one as it was released at a similar time, was more basic in every way in terms of gameplay mechanics and story, but that wasn't 'Consolitis'.

Rose tinted glasses. The combat in Deus Ex was bloody awful even for its time - the rest more than made up for it - and SS2 is positively archaic compared to Bioshock in terms of gameplay and options. It did atmosphere and scares a whole, whole lot better, though. Had Bioshock been a pc exclusive, the only difference would have been an inventory of some kind. The rest, I suspect - enemy types, ai, plasmids etc - would have been identical. This doesn't mean it couldn't have been considerably better - Bioshock is comprised of lovingly detailed and well thought out scenes padded out with generic fluff - but blaming consoles is too easy.

It's hard to put your finger on exactly when the splicers transformed from disturbibgly real and ruined citizens of rapture to wondering Doom monsters, but it certainly happened. Probably around the time when 2k stopped adding wonderfully realised set pieces and set us off collecting stuff.

My favourite game ever!
To people saying things like "Got bored of it in an hour" you do realise your character evolves through the story? If you haven't completed it you've missed what the game is about!
To who said about being babysat with the arrow, if you just followed the arrow you missed most of what Rapture has to offer!
To appreciate the story you do have to collect and listen to all the audio diaries.
Personally, the best way to play is to rescue all the Little Sisters, you get some brilliant Tonics in the gifts and of course the nice ending :)

its decent. Good Combat, upgrades etc but way way too repetitive. Half decent story as well.

no way GOTY 2007... Witcher holds that title :D (pc)

But Crysis is an FPS. Game mechanics wise they're about a deep as a puddle.

And yeah, your right, it probably is rose tinted for SS2 and DE. But games have moved on in all respects, so you'd expect improvements - yet I still think they both did the Action/RPG better than Bioshock did.

Bioshock needed more depth. More options, more customisations, more paths. It was lacking the RPG elements because they're more difficult to pull off on a console, plus the majority of console players prefer more action-orientated games, so you design games for its market.

I don't hate consoles, I love my 360 as much as my PC. Its just that games like this work better on the PC, and it narks me to think how much better Bioshock would have been had its primary platform been the PC.

Just completed it - brilliant game! :D

I harvested all the little sisters and got the bad ending, then watched the good ending on youtube :)

Which ending did you get?

What disappointed me was the complete lack of any of the RPG elements promised. The atmosphere is there yes, but the gameplay was not even close to what I was expecting (more in the Deus Ex/System Shock mould). The storyline was good in parts but the ending was so predictable and imo the game mechanics were far too simple.

I wholeheartidly agree with this man.

Yeah me too, it had a lot of potential and the setting was wonderful, sound effects and music were wonderful. But it was too linear, too FPS and too bland a story. I really hope they learn from this for the sequels but I doubt it :(

I could say the same about Deus Ex though, talk about overrated pap too tbh...

System Shock 2 and Thief 1 & 2 > Deus LOL and Biocrap by a country mile :)

Like what i did with the names? :D
