Wahooooooo just what everyone wanted. a crappy new entry level plastic dSLR

http://web.canon.jp/imaging/eosd/eosdigital5/index.html

exactly what market they are filling here i have no idea.

Canon said:
Famous EOS usability, now with bigger controls and enlarged menu text.

oh goodie, so it's an SLR for the partially sighted?

Turns dull, underexposed shots into beautiful photos.

oh yes, excellent, you don't even need to be able to understand exposure or any photographic techniques anymore because the camera will just do it for you!

I wonder what features will come next? Auto-composition? Ansel Adams setting for InstantWin™ landscapes?

I don't know why i find this so annoying. I think that it would have real appeal if they had managed to make it the same size as a G9 or similar as a really good portable slr but really it just seems like a fisher price 400D :/

Maybe if Canon worked on their core customers for a change, perhaps release a top end sports camera without a crippling autofocus deficiency, or got round to replacing the 5D someday instead of just denying that it needs updating.

bah, anyway, rant over. discuss :p

I dont know, dude. Think about the size of the Photography market, and how much of that is split into two basic groups: Advanced DSLR Enthusiasts, and People Who Want Nice Pictures Of Their Nephews Birthday Party With The Animals At The Zoo. I'd say the latter is a far, far larger demographic. People who dono't know that there are already cameras that exist that can do this exact task.

That said, from my very limited experience, it does seem that the "enthusiast" range is very limited in terms of choice/cost cameras. You have what, 4 or 5 in the Canon range, all very expensive, making it very hard to get in to. It does seem to need a revamp! Aren't Sony doing some new bodies in *** Alpha range that are quite good? Should help to open it up to new enthusiasts, but you're right about the current ones. Unless you choke up for a 1d MarkIII though :P

It's about £200 more expensive than the 400D kit, so it's a struggle to see what they're aiming for. Even the 450D's cheaper by ~£50 - and that's before you have any cashback deal.
If it was going to be a "more accessible" DSLR, surely it would have to be cheaper than what's there?

(figures from quick Google and the Canon press release)

From a business point of view this makes perfect sense. The low end DSLR market is booming and once the price settles down (RRP is never the street price) it should provide canon with a very good competitor to the D40.

are you kidding me? that's absolutely ridiculous. have they gone mental? charging more for what is a cut down 450... or is it just left of 400D stock (400D is 10mp, 2.5" screen, 3fps, 7 point AF, right?) with a cut down buffer (4 raw images... lol). and it costs more?!!! WHAT THE ****?

Calm down. Do you really think Canon will release it for more than the 450D? No way. It's going to be the cheapest DSLR they sell as it's essentially a 400D with DIGIC III, Liveview and and SD cards.

New 430EX II as well. Nothing amazing but the new hotshoe is nice.

400D has 9 point AF, though doesn't have the DIGIC 3.

The SRP listed on canon.co.uk is £500 for the 400D, so how much of a gap is there going to be?

haha i am calm :p just utterly bemused by canon's strategy

It looks to me to be a rejigged 400D designed partially to clear out old stock and to give something to compete with the D40. I recon street price will probably be around the street price for the 400D.

If it is fairly cheap as a Kit, and can use lenses compatible with the larger Bodies; It might just make that first step into DSLR a little less painful on the wallet, and on the brain :)

I really don't understand the argument for entry level bodies being easier to use. ultimately you just turn it to manual and you get shutter, aperture and iso... that's exactly the same whether or not your have a 1000D or a 1D.

Did you ever stop to think that maybe, just maybe, you're not in the target market

The point is to soften the learning curve; I agree you'll eventually end up on manual... at which point, you'll start looking towards a more capable body, and if you can keep your existing glass.. w00t :D

oh I know i'm not the target market but from way up here on my very very high perch it seems to me that the market is already flooded with entry level dSLRs from everyone, why is there a need for more?

i think my main frustration is that canon now seemed more focused on providing cheap base line cameras to draw in the ££££s rather than providing enthusiasts with cutting edge of technology. this seems to be a general trend in all industries (i'm probably just naive and it has always been the case) which i think is a shame.

Trouble is, Canon is just a business, at the end of a day.. not a service. There's probably more money to be made from entry level DSLR's than from enthusiasts. More profit anyway... given the cut down components.

yup, the A300/A350 are very much aimed at the P+S upgraders & you can get the A200 for £229 now body only which is a great price for a very competent camera.

large business in "doing what makes them the most money" shocker

400D is on clearance with the current cashback offer - so I dont believe much new stock to be coming to retailed - as such consider it discontinued. As for the 1000D - its kit price is £100 lower than the 450D (comparing RRPs) - so street prices should be ~£399 for 1000D kit and £499 for 450D kit.

I was waiting to switch to Canon since the beginning of the year - and I got a 450D for £500 a few weeks after release. As an early adopter, I do feel a little bit upset that the 1000D wasn't an option - I could have saved the extra £100 and put that into some glass. Minor concern as I probably would have went with the 450D still - 14bit RAW files look really dynamic - having lots of fun so far....

I fail to see the market for this over something like the 400D or 350D, which are still available from the right places for much less money. It'll be interesting to see how they do with 4 sets of bodies in the range now.
