Yup that's claritin, should work well though people respond differently to some things. I used to take Zyrtec and it didn't do much for me, but Claritin works great (loratadine)

I promise you that the vast majority of the stuff your GP gives for hayfever is available over the counter. I may just have a bit of insider knowledge being the poor sod dishing out these prescriptions for hayfever all morning. Still hayfever season does mean I get some short consultations and allows me to log onto the forums for 5 mins haha

I think I got shafted in sommerfield yesterday. Hayfever got really bad and i got some Benedryl at around 8:20, before Boots was opened and it cost me nearly £6 for 12 tablets !!!!!

Ive tried everything, pharmacy branded tablets, piriton and nose spray.

Nothing seems to work to well for me, so i just blow my nose every 2 hours and that seems to keep it at bay.

THe nose blowing isn't the worst part for me. What i can't stand (without medication) is the eyes itching and watering and the constant sneezing. The meds stops the sneezing and the eyes is much better, but my nose still runs and still have to blow it every 30 mins or so.

They prescribe different drugs to what over the counter can.
Yes and no, they will start off with something "over the counter" strength and tell you to see how it goes.

Anyway, cetirizine based tablets used to be prescription only.

As has been said go for generics not the brand names. ASDA do two 30 packs of own brand cetirizine based tablets for £5 or a single packet for £3 (and some pence).

Zirtec is something crazy like £9 for 28 tablets.

You havent tried glasses + facemask yet.

Glasses worked great for me, going to implement surgery masks soon... :D

Anyone tried the old honey method?

I have all year and stopped about a month ago, now I am suffering really bad with it.

What you do is find somewhere that sells locally produced honey, buy a jar or two and have it on some toast every morning. As it is made from local plants it is said to build an immunity against local pollen. Normally I suffer really badly in the beginning of spring and autumn time, summer I am normally fine. Can't find anywhere that sells it after my old supplier passed away. Works a treat, no drowsiness and is great for kids too!
