fist car help.

I'd say a xsara, more for the money.

Shame about not liking estates as you do get some good looking ones. Like a civic aerodeck....if thats what there called.

estates are not ruled out but the nice estates/tourers i see are out of my price range. Will have a look into the cvic one.

Is it just me or the xsara jsut dont look nice? - I know i cant be overly fussy on the final car i chose but rather one that ticks most the boxes.

You would get a tidy Xantia HDi for that money, hatch or estate...i think

Love those cars but i owned 2 so i would say that. Look nice still in the right colour and well specced and so so so comfy. Loads of room in either as well.

Petrols are pants but good diesels, well especially the HDI.

Cheap to run too as long as you buy good one and its had its spheres done and new fluid. Rest is all normal car.

Oh, handbrake turns are for the lose in them, just in case.... uses the front brakes for the handbrake lol

more info on the xantia please

my friend had an old one and died - cant remember if petrol/deisel.

when you say spheres are you talking about the suspension? what reg/year are you suggesting ?

Yes, the suspension. Try to look for an SX. VSX model has an extra sphere and is a wee bit more complicated due to this. Sport suspension on the VSX, but pointless.

You would get a higher mileage W plate HDI for 1k i reckon, although if mileage scares you the TD is still a good engine although noisy. Goes for ever. My old TD xantia finally gave up the ghost many moons ago with 230k on it, engine still fine. Was the suspension that died.

Fox actually probably knows more on Xantias than myself.

There damn good cars and if i ever had to go bargain motoring again this would be what i bought in a heartbeat. Just avoid the Activa.....fun until it breaks and 20mpg from the 2.0t petrol is not good. But so so much fun that car lol. Had F1 tech in it to basically corner flat, well, until it lost grip and went

i thought as much! arnt they expensive to get fixed if they do go. how do you check for this apart from seeing if it rises or not!?

Any Escort that doesn't say 'RS' on the back and costs more than £500 is a ripoff, for £2k it's a very very poor choice.
Some of the last of the line x reg Escorts had loads of extras and aren't a bad car at all, i'd have one over a citroen all day. Granted 2k is a bit steep for a escort but his budget is 2k, it doesnt mean he wont spend any less ;)

Usually due to the time it takes to rise and fall. Bit of google will tell you what to look for.

Good points is if you buy a good one then replacing the spheres can be done yourself with a handy tool, and cheaply too!

The ride height doohickies can get gummed up and stick a lot but thats so easy to fix. Long as spheres good, pump good, and fluid lines good then all is well, along as fresh fluid every now and again.

Fundamentally it's a terrible car, 'a load of extras' doesn't change that. Not that they did have a load of extras, the best you got was velour seats and aircon. Wow.

It may be a terrible car compared to your Beemer but there's a lot worse to be had at the money. I have an Escort and aside from having a rubbish engine, the gearbox is nice, the steering is resposive and i like the driving position. Its all down to personal taste. Personally for the money, dare i say it, a mondeo would be a good choice :D

It's not just a terrible car compared to the beemer, it's just not a very good car all round...

No, but a member of the family had a multitude of them before he got his mondeo; they were uncomfortable, slow, ugly, and just not very nice all round.

I'm not comparing it to the BMW, I'm comparing it to other stuff for less than £2k. It's crap and the Focus could not come soon enough for Ford.

The Escort is an excellent 500 quid banger but for real money its rubbish.
