Wanting to buy some new tyres

I've got some 16" alloys coming for the MR2 in a couple of weeks so I'm wanting to get the tyres ordered in preperation.

Quick search and I've found two potential tyres:
Pirille P6000
Toyo T1S

Both tyres come in 205/50/16 and 195/50/16, so I can get matching sets for both front and rear, or mix them up.

Pirille P6000 195 - £72
Toyo T1S 195 - £83

Pirille P600 205 - £103
Toyo T1S 205 - £104

Now the Toyo's are described as being long life. Seeing as I'm not wanting to go through a pair every 6k miles, would it make more sense to get the Toyo's? Will the offer satisfactory grip?

If I'm missing a really good tyre that I've not seen, feel free to suggest one! I'm not limiting myself to just those two tyres, I just thought Pirille are a good brand :)

I'm so horribly inept at this car malarky!

Pirelli are a reasonable brand, but it just happens that the 6000 is a pretty crap tyre. Just goes to show that going for the bigger brand names doesen't always pay off.

Having bought yourself a mid engined sports car, I suggest you don't skimp on tyres, as they don't have the most forgiving handling (though better in this respect than the earlier MR2s). The Toyo's offer excellent dry grip and reasonable wet grip, but they have soft sidewalls that don't suit all cars. They aren't particularly long lasting either, though you'd have to be a hooligan to get through a set of rears in 6k with a Mk3. They lasted the best part of 10k on the back of my MR2 Turbo.

Asking the opinions of people that own these cars (e.g. in an owners club forum) would probably yield more relevant information.

Sorry to be off topic, but what effect does this have? And if its a negative one, how can it suit certain cars?

It depends on various factors such as suspension design and weight of car. Softer sidewalls allow the tyre to absorb small bumps without transfering to to the suspension, giving a smoother, quieter ride. Such sidewalls also tend to deform more under hard cornering, giving poor turn in and imprecise control. They can also be more prone to damage.

The Toyo T1R has a stiffer sidewall (though still fairly soft) and is a better tyre for most cars.

Annoyingly I've signed up to mr2oc.co.uk, and I'm not too impressed with the replies or quality of them so far!

MR2OC tends to be more laid back and focussed on social stuff and having a laugh. IMOC tends to be better for technical stuff but the moderating style can be a bit strict for some. If you're used to this place then it'll be fine though. If it's a mk3 you're probably best off going to MR2ROC though as both IMOC and MR2OC are very much MK2 oriented (although imoc does cater well for the mk1 as they host the mk1 club forum for us.)

There really are far too many MR2 clubs :p

EDIT - Looks like the ROC site is having trouble and people have migrated here for the time being:

Toyo are garbage imo

I'd be looking at Gooyear Eagle F1 or Falken FK452

Have a look at Camskill, they have some good prices.

Oi, stop going against the grain :p

Have you actually used the tyres? If so, why did ya not like 'em? I'm not keen on going for the F1's as I want my tyres to last a bit longer than a round of chedder cheese. What're the Falken's like?

Cheers for the links to the owners clubs guys, I'll give them a scope out at lunch :)

Yes, I had T1-S which grip quite well but will wear out very fast as they are soft. Steer well clear of T1-R which is the worst trye I have ever had. My guess is the T1-S will wear the same or worse than the F1's. I have Falkens on my current car and they are a very nice all round tyre. Read some reviews on TyreTest.

Also Firestone Firehawk SZ80 are a good all rounder but can be a little noisy.

Edit - other tyres I have used.

Avon ZZ3 - Not a bad tyre, I felt they were just a bit average.
Yoko AVS sport - Fairly carp
Yoko A539 - Quite good I thought but only had them for a very short time.
Bridgestone RE010 - Excellent dry grip, superb on the right car, can be a bit dangerous in the wet.
