Why do footballers spit so much?

I'll just add that often you will see long distance runners spitting for the same reason, footballers only get stick for it because they are 'seen' more on TV.
Exactly, and with 20 outfield players on the pitch, chances of seeing someone doing it are pretty high.

big wow, it spreads disease and what not, so does coughing and sneezing.
For anyone who does excessive exercise spitting is just a natural part of the workout really,
I dont want to be swallowing thick dry phlehm thats already affecting my breathing, id rather spit it out and get some water back into myself.

I used to spit when I was in a cycling club. I don't like spitting, but when you're doing a ten, sometimes you have to clear the airways. Saliva can simply be too mucous at times.

Of course but why the need to spit...i was under the impression salvia was good for the body.

you've obviously never played very much. i don't know a single sports man/woman who's never had a mouthful of thick mucous which at some stage needs to be got rid.

I honestly cannot remember ever seeing a 5000 or 10000m runner spitting on tv. I've never seen Paula Radcliffe spit. The odd dump but no spit.

when im out cycling i have to spit to clear the thick build of phlem that is near impossible to swallow and nearly chokes me if i dont get rid

same when i used to play football albeit to a lesser extent

Do they do it when playing indoor football ?
Does who do it when playing indoor football?

Speaking from personal experience, it's not something I would expect to see as often indoors, but I can't say I've never seen it and I couldn't be 100% certain I've never done it myself.

But it's a different set of circumstances playing indoor football that makes it much less likely to happen.

I've played many sports to a relatively high standard and have never had the urge to spit. Maybe I just don't suffer from excessive phlegm, but I have a few sips of water and my mouth feels clear after that.

I think it's a "macho" thing which doesn't look macho, and looks rather pathetic.

The only time I've felt the urge to spit was being floored by 2 props and a number 8, and had a tooth knocked out so had a mouth full of blood.
